Help Identifying 1 Luger

I have an opportunity to buy my first Luger (7.65)and would like some help identifying it and what would be a fair price to offer. All numbers seem to match except the mag.

Looks like a nice gun. Can you tell if the stock lug has been ground off or was there ever one on the rear grip strap? Value depends on that answer. Front sight is wrong, and generally these commercials are not highly collectable. The .30 cal. issue is also a problem as it detracts from it as a shooter. Unless I'm missing something here I'd want to be into it well south of $600.

She's looking ground off to me. I'd stay away from it unless the price is $450 or less.
But then I'm cheap...

It looks like the lug has been ground off, agree $400 - $500 range
will only be a shooter

The stock lug was most definitely ground off, and not very cleanly. It is a shooter only. No significant historical value that I can see. The price range quoted by Jamese is appropriate.

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but where do you guys find $400 Lugers? You can run into occasional bargains for sure, but to me it seems like the going rate for shooters is from $600-$700 and up.

The cheapest one I have found so far was a Duracoted DWM for $600, any other shooter has been $700 and up, even here on the forum. Have never been able to haggle my way down any further than that.

It is a 30 luger, thus harder to sell. Also, on the forum, you see that many of the folks who quote prices own more than a handful of lugers, so to them, that is what it is worth and they would be willing to pay for it.

i think $500-600, but more than that and you'd have trouble selling it.

True, those who already have what they need won't pay much at all. For example, I have as many AR-15s as I need so I would only pay rock bottom prices to get another one. On top of that I'm a cheapskate and I want to leave as much marigin for resale as possible, so it really has to be dirt cheap for me to buy. Still, I don't really see the prices I'm willing to pay as fair and correct market values.

I think your 'N' is a 'P'. the P block was made the last 3/4 of 1926 and a bit into 1927. With your low ser. no. I'd guess about the middle of 1926.

Thanks for all the input. I am buying this from a family member. The owner was my uncle(recently passed)and I am buying it from my aunt so I want to pay a fair price. This being said what do you think a fair price would be?

I and others gave values above, if you don't like them, then use your own values.

$500 is a fair value.

At a show in the SouthEast, I paid $625 for an unmodified .30 Luger DWM Alphabet Commercial 2 years ago in about 95% condition with correct magazine.

The combination of the ground lug, modified sight and finish condition puts it in the $450 range in my opinion. It's also got the left grip "chip" at the safety, broken when it was disassembled at one point.

Prices have softened in the past couple of years.

BTW, from what I can see of the magazine base, it's not contemporary with the pistol, but from a later period. The aluminum base magazines can vary in value from $150 to much more depending on many things. Please let us see a photo of it including the base and both sides. It may, in fact, add to the value of the package.

You'll get better pictures if you take them without a flash, and in indirect (shaded) sunlight.

The sight appears to be a marble, better than the original for a shooter.

WRT a .30 being less desirable, it likely boils down to the cost of ammunition if you don't reload for it. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the .30 Luger and own many pistols in that chambering. It's accurate, feeds reliably and loaded with a hollow point is a very wicked cartridge. I'm happy to pay less for a Luger in that caliber.

Back about 1989 I found an Erfurt Luger that had been reworked after WW1. It matched completely except for the replacement .30 caliber barrel. I gave it to my father who has since passed away and it's once again in my possession. I loaded some cartridges for him including ball and soft-nose hollow points. One Summer evening he and my brother were in the backyard sitting under a shade tree when my father saw a groundhog slowly coming their way and acting strangely. He handed the Erfurt to my brother and told him to dispose of it as they suspected it was rabid.

The first cartridge was ball and passed through without much effect. The second cartridge was a soft-nose hollow point and it turned the groundhog inside out.

For some years I used .223 cases to make .30 Luger cases and they worked fine but there's no reason to do that now. The cases are readily available and reloading them is as easy as any other pistol cartridge.

I guess I missed something here, as there's no 'jumping' post left...I suppose Ed deleted it...

My own personal feeling is that any Luger with a ground off lug is a parts Luger...

$450 sounds about right...
