Default Help me in identifying my great grandfather's luger

Hi,
I tried this on the military luger side with no luck. So I'll try here...

Copied from earlier post:
About 11 years ago I received from my grandfather few war time weapons. The weapons originally belonged to my great grandfather who was a finnish army officer in WWII. Amongst them was a 7,65mm Luger. Now I am trying to learn more about it and I thought I would ask you. I went through the markings photos, but I'm not sure which ones apply to my Luger.

The serial number on the side of the luger is 702 with no letter after it. Bellow the barrel, in the front of the body there is the serial number and bellow it is engraved the letter 'm'.

Here are some photos of my luger:

The stampings:

Factory DWM

Tikkakoski barrel 4"

If somebody could tell me more about this Luger I would the greatfull. The Luger has some sentimental value to me but it would also be nice to know what this is worth approximately (good condition)?

Thanks.

MK, Judging by the serial # placement and proofing, this luger began life as a DWM military issue. The single inspector's mark on the right receiver is unusal and as a post 1910 military, I would have expected the top of the chamber to be dated. It's possible that your pistol was made up from some leftover WW1 military parts at DWM, as part of their 1923 Finnish contract, but haven't seen this before. Also it was rebarrelled by Tikka Finish arsenal. TH

It would be odd that this luger would have been assembled from leftovers since all the parts are stamped with the same serial (excluding the 7). But thanks.

Do you have any idea when this might have been produced?

Mikko,

By "left over parts" Tom means that they were new parts left unassembled at the wars end, as indicated by the Imperial proofs on the right side.

DWM merely used new, un-assembled ,in stock parts to build these Lugers in 1923 for the Finnish Government. Serial numbers were applied at the time of production.

7.65 Parabellum Finnish Lugers are a bit more scarce, at least in the U.S., as most were re-barreled to 9mm by the Finnish Gov't at a later date. Does your Luger have a brass disc embedded in the right grip?

That is a beautiful holster, as well.

Ron

I see why you did not get responses, posting onto someone else's thread many times gets overlooked. Folks don't realzie it is a NEW posting, simply thinking it is a posting to comment. You also do not list a location, so value can be drastically different.

So, starting a new thread is always the best thing.

Finn lugers sell from $700-$1200

If yours is more parts (many are) I would take middle ground and say $900

Holster is a beauty, but; has it been messed with, loops changed, cut off, holes or filled in holes on the rear?

Is the inside "normal" (Look at some other luger holsters here), sometimes folks cut down to make the luger easier to pull out.

Otherwise, I would say the holster itself is worth $250-$350

the cleaning rod is a WW1 USA "style" unless marked SA on it, hard to prove it is Finnish, but I am not a cleaning rod expert.

Edvard, thanks. You are right, posting a new luger on to another's topic easily gets overlooked.

The holster has not been messed with. I would say the inside is normal because the luger fits and sits there quite snuggly. There is some number/letter combination on the back I really can't read completely. I'll have to check the cleaning rod. Location is Finland as you might have guessed.

If you mean am I going to sell it - the answer is probably not. It has some sentimental value to me so I am going hold on to it for now. If I would sell it, then it would a set. I'm here just learn more about this intriquing peace of history.

Good, I would love to own it, but would rather you keep it as a set!

Family heirlooms are good!
