I have "inherited" a Luger that has an American Eagle just ahead of the chamber and a symbol with some "gothic" initials on top of the action. It has a grip safety and also a thumb safety? It is in good shape and has matching numbers "30900 Germany" below the barrel. The action knobs, or whatever you call them , are dimpled. The magazine appears to be original. I have looked in several magazines and books, but need to find a better reference to help understand what I have here. Thanks, and Merry Christmas from the Heart of Texas

Sounds like you have a Model 1906 "American Eagle". It was made specifically with that marking for the American commercial market. The toggle knobs should be checkered rather than dimpled.

Thank you...yes, the toggle knobs seem to be checkered...rather than "dimpled", used the wrong term out of ignorance. The knobs have a depression in the center. Now maybe I can do some research to determine how many were made, etc. The top "gothic" initials are for "DWM".
Again, thanks for help. |

You have an American Eagle .30 caliber Pistol. the Serial Numbers 30900 would indicate that it was made well before WW-1. The barrel should be 4.75 inches long..a very slender and attractive barrel [when compared to the later guns]
All the major parts should have the full number...the small parts should all have '00' on them? It should have a grip safety, the area under the safety lever should be 'bright'. The extractor, when lifted up by the cartridge should say 'loaded' DWM stand for Deutche Waffen und Munitionfabrik...[or something like that..I don't do German] which means German Weapons and Munitions.... The blue is a rust blue, if original..it is fragile so store the gun in a cotton sock..[not a holster!] after rubbing light oil all over it except the wood grips.. The magazine should be bright metal with a wood base...it, too, could be marked 'Germany' Value depends greatly on the condition... Feel free to contact me by email, if you wish? The Shadow DOES know! and "Batman" thanks him for the great information. I will use your facts to check my weapon in the morning...it's locked away in the safe for the night...don't want any old bearded guy in red suit to have an accident! I do believe that it's original finish, at least 80%. Again, I am so gratful to you all for providing such valued info". I'm an elderly WWII type and will certainly return to this remarkable link. Happy New Year!
