Thor's Luger Clinic (TLC) Spot Repairs

The first was a bad spot on a otherwise very nice Mauser Salt blued Luger.

Then after the repairs just to the right frame ear, all other bluing original.

The second was a rust blued Erfurt that the owner wanted to present to his son, but not with the previous owner's inscription. I did the sideplate, the left frame flat and the frame high area next to the cam surface. All other frame bluing is still original. I also repainted the safety marking.

I have not had any formal training as a gunsmith. Bill Adair mentored me a while, then used me as a metal worker during the early 2000's. God has given me a gift and He gets all the credit, I am truley blessed to be able to work on these fine weapons.

I can testify to Ted's extraordinay talent in spot restoration. He has done a few pistols for me that were just fantastic. He has also done a couple of taotal restorations that were superb.

Ted -- Is this sight repairable without affecting other area (confining the repair on the front sight)? There are two issues, both on the sight: One of the previous owner cut a slot on the front sight and inserted a piece of white plastic chip inside, and the tip of the back narrower slice was also filed down a little bit. Thanks.

People in Africa had the habit of modifying front sight.

Check with Neil Keller (screename Hub) of Kustom Ballistics he might be able to fix that front sight. On the letter removal and repair on the Erfurt Luger, I just cut them off, they were very shallow, only deeper problems would require welding.

Brian Powley of Brian Powley Engravers did all the mavelous work on the American Pistolsmiths Guild's Baby Luger that was raffled off through the American Handgunner Magazine back in 2005, Brian's Avatar is a picture of him and President George Bush when Brian presented President Bush with a beautiful pistol he can tell you about. I asked Brian to ask President Bush if he liked Lugers, I dont ever remember if that question was made during the presentation but I doubt it. Brian is a world class engraver and my good friend.

I guess I am somewhat different, but seeing restored and modified Lugers makes me a bit sick to my stomach. The workmanship appears outstanding but just not something that should be done on historical weapons in my opinion.

Toter, Many if not all of the weapons modified by reputable gunsmiths like Martz et al are not that historical. Most are Commercial Eagln N's so no great loss. You have to remember that many thousands of military Lugers were chromed! There was many ways to meet your doom if you were a Luger pistol in the last hundred years. Most modern smiths are carefull not to work/modify on rare & valuble weapons.

Sometimes the Luger is so damaged by time or former owners that a restoration is the only option. We are truly lucky that there are a few people are around that can restore a fine old Luger to their former glory.
