Luger Model Help

Hey guys! I am thinking about starting a collection of Lugers sometime within this next year and was hoping for some info on the many models of Lugers I should be looking for. I currently have one Luger which my great grandfather got when he was fighting in WWI. I would have had one that my other great grandfather got in WWII, but it was stolen

I am hoping that over the next 10 years I can acquire a very nice collection, covering all of the main model types of Lugers (Black Widow, S/42, etc.) but I have no idea what all of them are, and I can't seem to find a list of them on the internet.

Start with Jan Still's new release "Pistols of the Central Powers" then go to his "Weimar Lugers" and the "Third Reich Lugers". You'll be doing yourself a favor by following this route as it will give you a great broad idea of what's there while providing some knowledge to protect you from fakes.

The Jan Still books mentioned above are excellent and very necessary books to have in collectiong Lugers.. But, you might start with "Lugers at Random" .. It's an excellent picture book, lists many variations, and it's also very affordable, ... Buy all the Luger books you can find! They all have some unique information... Best to all, til...lat'r...GT

This is where a full time job in the Army plus contracting with my father's businesness for the Federal Governments comes in handy. I also don't spend much money and save most of it so I can spend money on quality items such as Lugers.

CDL, I've cataloged over 135 variations of lugers including contract and commerical models. Michael Reese in his book "Luger Tips" suggest a collection of only 7 lugers, to allow one to have all the manufacturers, calibers and most popular barrel lengths. Lugerdoc

I feel one of the most important things is to decide what "era" you like, so that narrows down that 137 down to maybe 12-15 variations (or so). So think about what era you like the best.

Early commercial

WW1

Weimar era

Nazi era

post WW2

and of course lots of contract guns (dutch, porteguese, swiss (they also made their own), etc.
