Very Nice collection Christian... I own only one LP-08 holster... it was a gift from Patrick Villiers, and it is a reproduction. I could only dream of a collection like yours.

Default Mars

Many thanks Gentlemen..When I am too depressed seeing my portfolio on Bloomberg.com I look my holster collection..
Alf, I am just a collector and not at all an expert. George Anderson, Mauro and some others could speak about Mars much better than I might do. Mars was a berliner manufacture which made civil leather items but worked also for the german Army, specially holsters and pouches at the beginning of ww1.
LP08 Mars holsters have been made only in 1915 if I don't mistake, and they are very rare. Here are some other pics of my Mars 1915 pigskin.

Super nice collection of holsters, plus I love the smell of leather in the morning.

Speaking of smell, has anyone tried to get that new leather smell back in a 60 to 100 year old leather holster?

It is an interesting academic question but has no practical value that I can see. Suppose you had a very nice, almost pristine, original 80 year old holster that had considerable collector value and you gave it a new leather smell. How do you think that would impact collector value? I think it very likely would be considered a fake since it smells like it was made yesterday and then artificially aged. The smell of old leather is to be enjoyed, and just like the gentle patina acquired by a well cared for firearm, it is a mark of authenticity.

Christian's holster collection is a delight, and I couldn't even think about robbing them of their aged history.

Smelling a holster is one of the ways I authenticate age. Most W.W.I era holsters smell strongly of tobacco; the newer ones have a similar but not so pronounced scent. The eyes are easily fooled; not so the schnozzola.
