Well guys, I finally made good on my threat. I am now officially a resident of Alpine, Texas. (Big Bend area)
Though I am somewhat disappointed not to be finding barbecue guns just laying in the street as Hugh obviously does in his corner of Texas, I am nonetheless pleased with my new surroundings and invite members passing through to stop by for a little local lead spraying (and a visit to a local first class Italian restaurant I discovered last night; whooda thunkit?)

A good old buddy of mine relocated from Ohio to Texas a couple of decades ago. He's has a bumper sticker on his S-10 that reads, "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here just as soon as I could."

You don't have to be a citizen to live in Texas Hugh! ... the lower border is bleeding illegals the last I heard... I guess they are willing to live through the flooding just like you... Hopefully whoever the next President is, will put stronger controls on invasions...

A question I have;

I have bought and sold numerous guns the last 6-9 months and sent them all over the country. Some states like New York and Jersey, I ahve had to make sales receipts, etc. No problem, kinda expectd.

The one state with additional "requirements" from gun dealers has been Texas. e.g.

1. One was insistent that it HAD to come from an FFL 01

2. Several (in different locations) were insistent that my paperwork be VERY exact, which is fine, but no other state gun dealers have been so exact in their requirments.

3. One friend was going to send me many of his collection for me to sell, and his gun dealer was insisting that they HAD to go through them. I finally sent excerpts from the ATF that stated that C&R guns could come STRAIGHT to me (and I now have a FFL 01, so that made even less sense).

I thought Texas gun laws were a bit more lax than other states, but my feeling is that is not true?

I was born and raised in your neighboring state of Louisiana, but my sincere joy is to spend as much time as I can in the hill country of Texas. I guess I am somewhat lucky, as I, over the years, have made many friends in that part of world, so deer and turkey hunts come easily. Louisiana license plate reads "Sportsmans Paradise". Wrong--- give that award to Texas.
BTW, don't miss the Marfa lights and Indian Lodge.

Gregg got it right! The dealer that I use to receive my non C&R guns gave me copy of his license to fax whenever I can do that, and when I go to pick up my gun, he just hands me the form to fill out. And he wasn't going to charge me, but I give him $10 just for being so nice about it.

Collectors Firearms is a really neat store...lots of goodies of all kinds. They used to have a pickelhaube display that would knock your socks off. I haven't been there in years, but when our daughter lived in Houston the store was a must stop when we visited her. They have a passable knowledge of Lugers, but not necessarily expert since they handle so many different guns, so you need to go in with your homework done.

I've been to Collector's Firearms.

I've learned so much about Lugers this past few days on this site I regret I sold my old Luger to Collector's about 15 years ago. It was a mismatched one but I could have done better price wise.

Right now I'm looking to replace that one with another shooter and perhaps pick up a collector's model in the near future. Luckily for those of us in the Houston area there are gun shows at least every other week. I am planning to head out to one this weekend and see what's available.

I left NJ in 1968 to attend Texas A&M, that was a dramatic cultural change. I have been very fortunate that my life a career has kept me in Texas. While I live in Houston, my career has taken me to many parts of the world. It is always nice to come home to Texas.

You are located in one of my favorite sections of Texas, Alpine, the Davis Mountains and old Fort Davis. Coming from Utah you should be right at home with the climate and terrain.

I look forward to meeting you on one of my trips to West Texas or let me know when you come this way.

I did not realize that I was a Texan until I got here.

Welcome to Texas sir. This is one of the greatest States in the U.S. I really think you could put Texas by itself and it would be self sufficient. What State can you go from an ocean coast, to deserts, to pine wood forests, to flat lands, to mountains. Darn near any climate is here. And yes, we do have a lot of ignorant gun dealers here for some weird reason. Where I'm at though, it is VERY HOT! We even have our own unique history too.
