Failure To Eject

I'm assembling an old shooter out of mixed parts, and I expect some debugging. At this point, everything seems to be functioning normally except the ejector.

After the round fires, the toggle cycles normally; the extractor pulls the casing back, but it stays engaged. The next round starts up out of the mag as the casing clears, but the hung casing jams as the breech block moves forward. I pull back on the toggle slightly, and let the mag spring forces the spent casing out of the extractor and the next round slides into the breech.

I wonder if the ejector is worn out. I have a photo that shows the measured width of the triangular portion that slides in the block to, presumably, stop the casing's travel and help spit it out of the extractor.

I'd be interested in any guidance anyone might have for me.

Greetings Bob,
could be several causes for your Luger agony. One of them is the ejector (or the extractor), but I think it's more likely that you are having a spring problem.
You can try another magazine and shoot with a firm grip. If that don't help, try different ammunition (but not too hot). If still no luck, I would replace the main spring and inspect the ejector/extractor.

Apart from Steinar's good suggestions,

Also have a look at the small spring underneath the extractor (extractor is thingie on top, ejector is thingie on side).

It may be a case of the round getting stuck under the extractor, making it too hard for the ejector to push it out.

The ejectors don't really wear out, they just break

BP, I agree with the above comments. The photo of your ejector looks fine. What may be preventing it from working correctly, is not the triangular shaped portion, but its overall length or width in the receiver slot. The ejector should be free to move FULLY down in front of the breech face when the toggle is fully retracted. TH

Well, I am off to the range tomorrow to test my efforts. After stoning the ejector, I then had a failure to release the firing pin. The FP was cocked, but the side plate lever was not tripping it with the trigger bar. I swapped out the entire side plate and everything seems to be working OK - ejector and FP. So, I'll know better after I squeeze off a few tomorrow.

If it doesn't release the firing pin, change the L shaped lever in the sideplate or inspect that thingy on the sear bar. It's a puzzle, you will get it working in the end!

Thanks to all for your guidance.

My trip to the range was not as fruitful as I expected. The alternate side plate did not seem to make a difference.

I have three trigger bars and triggers, and only two side plates. I have one or two more combination options there. I'll report back after I change a few parts around.
