Default grip safety

I disassembled my parts gun 7.65 and do not see how to get the grip safety to return to position. It appears there is a spring or something to retain it in the rearwar position, but I can't seem to locate it or tell where it would go.

I'll appreciate your help.

Where is the edge of Texas? I feel like I can be of assistance, but hands on is far better than trying to explain by writing.

The edge of Texas is where I live, just that I am on the other side of the Rio Grande. Rod, if you want to drop by the house again I would enjoy the visit and I can show you how to assemble the grip safety (obviously it isn't hard if I can do it!). If it turns out that the spring is missing, you can get one from Tom Heller.

Ok, I will try:

Lay the gun on its right side, with barrel pointing left
Look about ¾ way down on the grip, right side and you should see the grip safety spring (leaf type)
If present go to next step if not contact Tom or you can make your own.
Slide the grip safety into position in the frame
The spring engages the lever on a narrow ridge, so this often slips free during reassembly. Experiment by moving the lever up and down while pressing to the left until you feel the spring engage.
Lift the lower section of the lever up and place the pin into its slot.

Good Luck!

Vern

P.S. You can use an old style large hair pin to make the spring if you lost yours:
You might also get you a strong magnet to search the floor where you first disassembled your gun to find the original one.

Thanks to everyone for the tips and offers. I fell last night and hurt my knee pretty bad, so I won't be doing much for the next little while at least. Also, I'm scheduled to have a defibrillator installed soon. So, Ron, I won't be able to take you up on that kind offer for awhile anyway.

The edge of Texas is El Paso for me (is a resturant named that on the border with NM and there used to be a public radio program with that name).

Vern, I suspect the spring must have left for parts unknown. As soon as I can I will sweep the floor or my work area with a magnet to see if I can hit gold...er, steel.

All the help is much appreciated.

Thanks, Tom. I'll have to see if I can find it first.

Okay, I know this is stupid, but I've never claimed to know much at all about Lugers, so here goes.

I'm still recovering from some minor surgery and my knee is still bunged up and sore, so I can't get down (or up!) from the floor of my work area to check real well for the spring. So, I'm wondering if it'd matter if I just left the grip safety non functional. I don't like them much anyway.

It's a shooter parts gun and no collector value is lost.

You can leave it non-functional, and still be able to shoot it. But you will have to be extra careful because you will have no capability to make the gun "safe" once it is loaded. The thumb safety only keeps the grip safety from being depressed, it won't block the sear by itself.

Thank you, Ron. Guess I'll have to do some hunting for the spring soon.
