I know one shouldn't generalize, but I wonder about value between the two years. I ask from the prospective of owning a '38. When I use Simpson LTD for a general guide, he seems to list many more '39s than '38s.
Is a '38 less common (hence more desirable) than a '39 or is the Simpson data just a snapshot and skewed for whatever reason. TIA...Bob |

Without looking at my published references... I would say from memory YES, 1938 Mausers are less often seen... I seem to recall that production numbers in 1938 were lower... but someone who has the time to check can probably add to this thread and let you know for sure... I know that the 1938 dated holsters are also rare... especially in good shape... I know my good friend Ted Green spent a long time finding one to complete a 1938 rig... to give as a gift to another family member.

Bob,
At least two series of Mausers were made in 1939, the "S/42" and the plain "42". An S/42 1939 Mauser is harder to find than a 1938. Jim

Approximate production figures, 1938 (116,000), 1939 S/42 (29,000) and 1939 Code 42 (88,000).
There are two subvariations of the 1938 WaA SE/63 & SE/63 and WaA SE/83 & SE/63. There are at least 5 subvariations in the WaA of the 1939 Code 42 Lugers. To me, the 1939 Lugers are more interesting!! The 1938 and 1939 Code 42 Lugers should have the same value, with the exception of the 1939 S/42 which are more difficult to find! |

I knew the experts with more time on their hands than me would get here with the facts... thanks Jim and Frank!
