I am 50 and just recieved my first real Luger, and cannot see the sights!
Rather I can see the sights OR the target but not both. All #'s match, but has been re-blued Artillary model. Would like to have installed(with replacement parts) rear and front aperature sights,, simple elegant and REVERSIBLE.(no harm done for future owner) Should you be qualified and interested in this work, or know someone who would be capable, and especially if you have a better Idea, I'll be listening as I'm ducking the rocks and flames. robert |

No rock or flames, been interested in Lugers my whole 60 years, collected 30 of 'em ( years that is ) and a gun smith for 32 years, I'll get to blood type as we get to know each other, I myself would not be skilled enough I do not believe to tackle the job, bit I am a bit unsure as to what exactly you are wanting in a sight system....perhaps you may want to go on line to www.brownells.com and see what sight systems are available today, perhaps find a shooter grade arty top and make the modification to it and use the shooter top when you want to and change back to original top for show/display etc......please do not lurk in the background, contact me/us here if we can help...

I would recommend that you obtain a regular complete Luger pistol toggle for modification.
The original rear sight could be ground down and a dovetail installed (machined in) to hold whatever kind of peep rear sight you might wish to use... Perhaps the flip rear sight from an AR15? or some other sight originally intended for mounting via dovetail on a 1911A1 Colt... The front sight can be easily fabricated by Policeluger or any number of gunsmiths... I suggest that you start with a P-38 front sight because it will fit the front sight dovetail (unless it is the fine tuneable front sight type) and it has the square front sight blade appearance that I think you are looking for, but might have to be welded and made higher to match whatever rear sight you go with... This conversion would be completely reversible without damage to the Artillery Luger that you can still display with original parts... Welcome to the Lugerforum!

Robert, Just learn the technique of point and shoot. It's an effective procedure..look at the target down range, not at the sights. I was shown this in basic training. The instructor had us all shooting a dime out of the air in ten minutes. You don't think Annie Oakley sighted every time she popped a glass ball out of the air? Actually she cheated and used shot. My grandfather had the same issue. He had an interesting pair of shooting glasses which had some extra lenses attached to the frame which allowed him to see the sights and the target. This allowed him to shoot compeditively into his mid-eighties. This was in Swizerland, where shooting is like golf over here, I have no idea if there is an opthomologist in the US who can do the same for you.

I found this photo of an original Pacific Arms custom Luger (in our Members Gallery) from early last century that utilized a custom peep sight that was attached above the lanyard loop by drilling and tapping the frame...I think this could be improved upon by removing the pins that hold on the lanyard loop, and using the same method to attach the sight base...
It would all be custom if recreated today, but I thought the photo might be helpful... ![]()
