Luger Carbine hanger & serial number

Making a carbine with 16 inch barrel. If I weld a hanger in the normal place on the luger, the serial number will be destroyed. It is a 1920 commercial. Is it legal to destroy the serial number if you restamp the serial number in a different place? Or would it be better to attach the fore stock to the barrel and cut out the wood to allow the short recoil? Any ideas would be appreciated.

I thought that was going to be the answer. So how do you make a carbine with a fore stock? I would like the stock not to recoil with the barrel, but cannot think of how to attache a hanger and not ruin the serial number. I guess I can attach the stock to the barrell, but then it would move back with the barrel. That is if the long and heaver barrel will move back at all. I have the barrell attached and ready to test fire.

John Martz has been making original style carbines for years. I can't believe he hasn't at least partially obliterated the serial number on the frame when installing the forearm extension. Do any of the Forum members have a Martz carbine to determine how he does it?

Maybe the end of the hanger could be made in a Y shape and then weld in two spots above the serial number and on either side of the slot where the take down lever is located. This would be two smaller welds. A thought anyway.

Fired the 18 1/2 inch carbine just to see if it fuctions before doing anymore work on it. I fired it with three different mags, fired Win 115 gr FMJ, Collins 124 gr FMJ and Win 147 gr SXT. the gun fed all three different rounds the same. It stove piped once out of about 40 rounds. The rest chambered fine manually, but did not extract andn did not work semi automatic. Does the John Martz carbine fire semi automatic or must you manually operate the toggel? Also fired my Martz Baby Luger. I worked great and was accurate. But it would not feed the Win 147 gr SXT, I think because it has a more blunt point. My J. Dewey target luger fired all three type of ammo fine. Would a heavy 9mm load made the carbine function properly?

Richard,

Contact your nearest BATF office. Explain what you are doing. There is a form that you can file to legally remove and replace a firearms serial number. It is legal to do so, if done through the proper channels.

I spoke with John Martz and he said his 16 inch carbines do fire semi automatic after a lot of tuning.

Ron Smith is correct about the existence of an ATF legal procedure for movement of a firearm serial number... make sure you follow it to the letter... and don't do ANY work on it unless you have their approval in your hand. As long as you include some quality photos in your request, showing your gun as it currently exists, and you should be able find some photos of a carbine forearm hanger installed here on the forum to also submit, they should have no problem approving your request.
