It is a six shot broom which in itself is rare...you don't see them everyday.

Pat,
It would appear that you have come upon a true rarity. If authentic, it is worth a small fortune. When I was collecting early semi-automatic pistols before I started collecting only Lugers because I couldn't afford the really rare early autos, I would have robbed a bank to buy a gun like this. It is so rare that it will have to be examined by a world-class Mauser collector (which unfortunately, I am not). It is of the same configuration as the original 10-shot prototype of the Model 1896 submitted by Paul Mauser to the Swiss Patent Office. The serial number 1 notwithstanding, the spur hammer, single lug bolt locking system, stepped barrel and side panel milling places it in the very earliest C96 production. This is a magnificent collecting treasure and I truly hope it turns out to be 100% authentic. Congratulations!!!!

Pat,
This gun is so rare and unique that the wealthy collectors in the market will probably set the value through bids if it ever is offered for sale. It is in about the same category as the Borchardt/Luger #5 or some of the preproduction Lugers that command astronomical prices. I do not think I will be too far off the mark to guess it will be at least $50,000, but I have no firm basis for that estimate. Steve's suggestion to contact Horst Held for an esitmate is probably as good as any since Horst does deal in exotic high-value firearms. There are probably others as well but I do not move in those elite circles so I can't offer any additional suggestions. By the way, if Albert is coming to visit, be sure you check your jewely and silverware before he leaves! ![]()

Pat,
This from "The Broomhandle Pistol" by Erickson and Pate: "After testing several unnumbered prototype pistols, Mauser commenced production in mid-1895. From known serial numbers, total production of these early Spurhammer pistols was but 50 and encompassed not only the ten and twenty shot variants, but also a few six shots." I would say that the pistol that you have here is probably one of those few six shot models that are mentioned in the above book. This book is 20 years out of print but it is listed here if you are interested: http://www.alibris.com/search/search...*listing*title SteveM |

very interesting.
A quote on a C/96 site: "First pre-production model in 6-shot. RUECKLAUF PISTOLE SYSTEM MAUSER OBERNDORF a NECKAR markings in three lines in space normally occupied by rear sight. Believed limited to only 20 pieces." I examined the 1897 publication "Mauser Selbstlader" by R. Wille, first published in 1896, as it's one of the earliest books on the C/96. These are two images of the 1896-1897 model, in 10 round capacity and 20 round capacity versions. They have the later type hammer, but still have the stepped barrel: ![]() ![]() |
