These and other varieties come up on e-Bay from time to time.

Do a search for "gun oiler" and/or "antique gun oiler", etc...

By the way, that photo appears to be of a prototype 5inch barrelled 1902 "fat barrel". And note it has a Swiss type disc magazine. I wonder what is stamped on its chamber? I also wonder what its serial number is.

Doc,

This photo was seemingly "borrowed" from C. Whittaker's web site "Land-o-Borchardts"...

http://landofborchardt.com/

Click on the "Other Luger" menu tab...

It is serial # 10000 B...a prototype...

Charly,

My guess is that these nice little silver-pated gun oilers get added along the way by collectors...having one in a leather pouch is also nice. Or maybe some of the cased presentation lugers had them when sold as a cased set.

You see them from time to time at gun shows (usually on dealer set-up days only...) and on some of the auction sites.

I have been quitely picking them up when I can...usually for under $ 20 or so. Many show up on UK web sites...

Many are vintage oilers for fishing reels or sewing machines or typewriters...

Do a search on e-Bay for "oiler"...

Here is a little collection of "oilers" I have picked up from time to time. Not really for lugers, but fun & cheap items to pick up.

The one in the top position of my photo will eventually go with a Swiss Navy luger I hope to own one day...

The oil bottle with the leather sleeve shown at the beginning of the post will sometimes be found as an extra item in a cased Borchardt or cased M1900 Luger pistol. It was not actually an oil bottle supplied by Loewe or DWM, but it could be considered from the same period. Collectors like to expand their sets with various accessories from the same period.

There was also a German grease tin (in a leather sleeve) which can sometimes be found in cased Borchardts or cased M1900 Luger pistols. Such a grease tin is shown on page 51 of the book 'Luger: The Multinational Pistol'.

Pete, a great set of oilers, some of which I have in my collection. I like the oval oiler with the weave pattern. I skipped one on eBay because it had a small dent, but I shall eventually find one on eBay. You beat me on eBay for one of these oilers - I might have kill you (with a DWM 471 bullet)!!

If you are searching for an oil bottle for your display, consider a glass bottle of 3-in-1 oil which was very popular with hunters during the early 1900's. 3-in-l oil was sold as gun oil by famous retailers such as A&F, and I have a sealed bottle of such oil for my Luger Carbine display.

Good luck,
Albert

Hi Albert,

I must have been lucky that day on e-Bay and caught you sleeping...

Honestly, I did not know we were competing for the same item.

The basket-weave one is one of my favorites. It goes with my 8" Heiser holster with its basket-weave pattern.

Hello Pete,

We have never bid against each other on an oiler, but I was just giving you a friendly warning (just joking).

I must have been sleeping when previous oilers with weave patterns were available on eBay, and I continue to keep my eyes open for one in excellent condition. Indeed, it is a very nice oiler to have with any Luger pistol/carbine.

I also appreciate your Eagle oiler even though I do not know much about it.

Cheers,
Albert

This nice grouping was on e-Bay last week.

I tried but did not win the auction.

David

Can you provide some documentation to support the "real deal" statement ?

I am not aware DWM issued oilers and have always assumed they were part of "put together" cases and rigs...

Borchardts were sold by Loewe, and subsequently DWM, as cased sets, to include stock, holster, and accessories. The oilers on Chuck's site are the "real deal" for such a cased set.

DWM did not sell Lugers as cased sets, so you are correct that they are "put together".
