What is the difference between a reblue and a restoration?
Price wise does one devalue the piece more over another?

yes on the 2nd question...
A reblue can be a quick buff job, it can be just dipped, and it can be buffed bad , while a restoration will require a lot more work, more work, more price. Ed |

IMHO: Depending on pits and how bad the finish is, a proper restoration can raise the value of a gun.

I have a 1937 S/42 which was saved from Russian clutches, had it's reblue job removed, a faithfull late 1937 salt dip blue, new walnut grips and fresh springs placed and the 'gesichert' marking correctly filled again. I'd call it a restoration.
![]() Moreover, the work produced by experts like our own Thor are restorations in every respect. It's kinda like comparing a new paint job to a body-off restoration in the car business. |
