Test Luger Holsters

I am curious about real US AE Test holsters (okay, so last night I saw 2 or 3 of them), and wondered; how the heck can you tell if it is real fake????

Any pointers?

Besides the obvious of new versus old, I am guessing that they are so 'rare" that folks simply do not know?

Ed,

If it smells like goat, pig or camel it probably is a real fake

(In fact, if it smells like anything remotely resembling cow after 100 years, it's probably fake too). If it smells like a small rodent died in it, you're getting there....

Ed, I don't know the characteristics of the reproductions and have only one original holster now so it is hard for me to comment. My advice is that when looking at a possible "Test" holster be cautious and have your check book with you and as always, know what you are looking at.

No pointers. Like George, I have only one and that is a small sample to draw from. Look at the books (Bender, Still, Kenyon, etc.) and check over any holster you are considering very carefully. If you saw 2 or 3 in one night, you have either hit the mother lode or a stack of repros. Be prepared to spend a lot of money and get a right to return guarantee.

Ed, also be aware that almost all US holsters of that period are of exactly the same style with differences only is dimensions. Best to carry a model 1900 with you and try to slip it into any holster offered. Ther were good copies made a few years ago.
