Default 1900 commercial luger

Guys,

A few weeks ago I was at a local gunshow here in MA and examined a 1900 commercial Luger that had been refinished with replacement grips (possibly Franzite?) on it. The guy wanted $950.00, did I turn down a "keeper"?

I am hoping I will see the gun again at some local gun show.

Thanks!

Mark

Mark,

I recently paid about that much for a refinished, mismatched 1900 AE. I bought it as a shooter and I am very happy with it. I have always admired the early lugers with dished toggles and pencil-thin barrels. The gun was expertly refinished by Ted Green (Thor) although it must have been a basket case when he took it on.

To answer your question with a question: Why do you want the gun?
A refinished example with replacement grips would have negligleable collector value.
The term "refinished" can encompass anything from overbuffed and dip blued garbage to an expert restoration.
In my opinion, if you are looking for a collector gun/investment this is not it.
If you just love early lugers and must have one, maybe this is a good deal.

Karl,

It was a very nice looking piece and would make an interesting "shooter". Perhaps I'll consider buying it if I see the gun again. I just thought it was a bit overpriced for what it was.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark, I do not think you missed anything special at that price. I bought this gun on the internet a year or so ago for $1000. not pristine, but all original. Be patient, there are still good deals out there.

Doug,

Thanks, I'm going to Louisville in a few weeks, perhaps something may turn up there.

I've been mostly a P.38 guy but have caught the Luger "bug" recently.

Very nice piece for the money, now I know what to look for.
