Have you ever considered?
I've noticed that matching serial number mags are somewhat rare. Not exactly unheard of or anything, but it doesn't seem to be the norm and doesn't stop most sales. So, that got me thinking....
What happended to those other mags? And is it possible to find the one that matches your old one? Maybe way out of coincidence, but what are your experiences with that. Have you ever gotten another Luger and found the mag to another one you own? How cool would that be?

IMHO there are only two (perhaps 3 for Navys) magazines ever made that are truely matching for any military luger, when you consider type of construction, proofing, size & style of numbers and suffix lettering. Police lugers are the exception, as the police added newer type mags with only the numbers, as needed during the life of the luger. TH

Steve this is a hobby unto itself. There are many, if not most of the collectors, that scan on e-bay for numbers. And in fact, there is a listing here on the forum of people offereing to trade their extra for matching mags.
Don Hallock has put out a list for years on this subject. So, yes, it does happen that people come across one, but rare. Same with people looking for a "part" to try and make their gun "look" right. To be truely matching, like Tom said, it has to match exact lettering, size, model (i.e. DWM, Mauser, erfurt all look a bit different)... Many folks are happy if they can match up the same suffix number or acceptance numbers. Ed

Oddly, I'm not surprised. It seems that every possible niche has been thought out so thoroughly that no matter what aspect you look at it from, there's a market.
I guess I'll probably occupy a lot of time looking for mine too..... :-P

Ed, Tom (Lugerdoc) is right on the money regards construction, numeral size, letter style and Waffenamt Marks. If you know Military Mauser Magazines it is possible to identify the type of Luger that it was shipped with, except for the transition areas, then it's either one or the other.
Every Luger Nut wants to find pistols with the matching magazine(s). Next, he wants to find a matching magazine for his Luger. It's tough to find Lugers with matching magazines and close to impossible to find a matching magazine for a Luger that didn't already have one. I have coined a term that I call "Proper Magazine". That is a magazine with the proper body for the magazine that was shipped with the Luger, it has the proper Waffenamt Mark for the one shipped with the Luger, it has the same suffix letter as the Luger and I'll try to get as close to the number as possible. Even this can be tough, but in time it'll happen. |

Steve, the only places I know are here on the Luger Forum, Jan Still's Luger Forum and as Ed already said, Don Hallock.
There are also Luger Magazines that are auctioned on eBay, gun shows and the like. Don Hallock has a catalog of many many magazines, but I have a hunch very few matches have ever been found. I think it's easier to find a needle in a haystack or winning the Powerball. I have come as close as 7, 100 and 256 difference in number, but most of my Proper Magazines are greater than 300 off. Good Luck!! |

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to seem dense, its just that I've never heard of Don Hallock or Jan Still. Heck, the only Luger I've ever held was this weekend at the gunshow. I'm still waiting for Alf to get back from wherever he went and ship it to me. Assuming he got my C&R FFL that is.... He's on the "Left Coast"...... :-P
I'll look into the Luger periodicals (I almost wrote "magazines" twice but I didn't want to further confuse the sentence) for matching magazines.

Steve, was in a hurry (in class all week, maybe I should just pay attention to the class ).
Don Hallock has kept a list up for years, you look up and try to find a missing mag for your gun. I have never found a match, but its fun to try. Jan Still has written five books on the Luger and Axis pistols, I feel his are the best books around for overall info, pictures, etc. Ed |

I have a copy of Don Halleck's list of luger magazines.
If you will tell me the details on your luger (Manufacturer, year of manufacture, serial number and letter suffix if there is a suffix, I'll be happy to look at the list and tell you if it has a match included. David |

David,
If you want to see the pictures, it's listed in the "for sale" section titled "FS 1939 42 code". The serial number is 3209, it's a 42 code and was has a 1939 date on it. The mag it comes with has a 6911 serial number.... Thanks a million for any and all help you can give me. I know it's a long shot, but I've made a few long shots in my time.... :-) Thanks again,

Steve:
It's the usual negative report. Don's magazine list has no magazines showing for any 3209 serial numbered 1939 S42 luger, regardless of suffix. The odds are always terrible with these quests, but it never hurts to look. Btw, my list is about a year old. I have not heard that Don has issued an update. David |

I sent Don an e-mail requesting a list several days ago, but have yet to recieve a reply. Does anyone know a better way to contact him? I am looking for a fxo 37 magazine with the number 2303 on it. The suffix is t but I am certain that it will not be available, as this was a war trophy and did not have it with it when captured. So 2303 with any suffix would do for my needs. Thanks to all for any and all information you may have to offer. Best, Don

Don:
I looked at Mr. Halleck's magazine list. I see no entry for an fxo 37 2303 magazine with any suffix whatever. I'm sorry for the negative report. Again, this list is about a year old. David |
