DWM 1918 Commercial?

Hey guys, just got my second luger two days ago. Its a DWM chamber dated 1918/20. Can anyone tell me what this is? Is is a 1920 commercial model or what? Has new barrel but it seems to be in 9mm not 30 luger. Thanks Bob

You have a DWM military made in 1918 and property marked by the Reichwehr in 1920 as a piece of military property. It is not a commercial piece.

Hi Bob,

From the info you give it seems to be a Double Date ( 1918 over 1920 ) DWM. It is a Military piece that was reworked in 1920 ( Versaille Treaty ). Changed barrels are not uncommon as a lot of those guns shot corrosive ammo.

A Double Date is nice to have in a Weimar era collection.....Enjoy....

The 1920 stamp does not necessarily equal a re-work. It does, however, necessarily mean that the piece was considered military property by the Reichswehr. It's significance is as a PROPERTY MARK, not a date. In fact, there are pieces that are documented as having the 1920 stamp applied as late as 1923 in efforts to fool the Ailied Control Commission.

There is actually a 1918/20 marking in Weimar Lugers (page 82) That Luger also has the proper stamp too (1920). I have wondered the difference between the double dates 1920 over 1918 from the 1918/20. Constanzo says 1918/21 indicates a rework? Interesting topic for sure!

While we are on this train of thought, what would you make of one with a 1920 where you expect to see it and the original date missing or ground off. (I've gotta get that out and look closer!)

I have a 1920 marked police with the earlier date of 1917 just barely visible where it was ground off. I've had a number of these in the past and may still have a Reichswehr marked thus.
