Question a recent aquisition

My father in law recently gave me a 1939 Luger in near perfect condition with original finish. I took it to a local dealer who did not know much about them other than it was in excellent condition. I assume that is a military version because of the German Eagle stamped on it in a few places. All of the numbers match including the mag. The holster has a persons name stamped on to it also with the German Eagle stamp. How could I go about finding what happened to this individual POW, KIA or survived to the end or even still surviving?

I do know that:
- it is a 1939
- all matching numbers inside and out
- also matching number mag
-excellent condition very slight holster wear on the barrel near muzzle

What I would like to know is:
- general value
- what type of possible history it may have
- is it a collectible piece
- is it exclusively a WWII piece

What is the name stamped on the holster?? Other than that there isn't much to go on.. And pictures of this "stamp" and name would help a lot. Unless it is someone very well known, it is almost impossible to find info about them.

hello and welcome Eddie;

give us a bit more information;

1939 and what is ont he toggle (S42 42, etc)

What is the # under the eagles on the right?

most likely the stamping of a name is the holster manufacturer, but if "carved" in, it is possible to look for a ww2 vet in the archives, but without a serial number a very long shot.

Would love to see pictures?

Ed

I am sorry the pistol is 1940. 42 is on the toggel. The number under the Eagles on the right is either 656 or 856 I am far sighted and the first number is stamped light. The name on the holster is Karl Barth Waldbro dated 1939. I am still trying to figure out the photo upload. give me a minute.
