Default Mauser Trademark Question

A subtitle on page 596 of Sturgess says: "The Mauser Tonne (Barrel) Trademark". I cannot find that Tonne translates to Barrel in any reference, to include my native German, German speaking, wife. All translate Tonne to Ton, as a measure of weight.

A number of references, Sturgess and Hallock to name a couple, say the logo, as registered by Mauser in 1909 using the word Tonne, represents a barrel of gun powder and the vertical lines the staves. With that, "Mauser Barrel" would be the proper term for the logo, rather than "Mauser Banner".

Can anyone clear this Tonne, Barrel thing up for me?

Jack

The logo was adapted by the Quandt group and the same style as the DWM, NWM, Comet logos in later years. You also see it in the IWK and IWKA logos up to some years ago.

The design may also be a reference to DWM's Berlin-Borsigwalde building design with its (then) innovative curved roof design.

The Mauser banner, however, was first registered in 1919, the DWM banner in 1936. These registrations can be found with the Deutsches Patent und Markenamt (DPMA).

There may have been earlier registrations as per Sturgess, but I haven't found evidence of a pre 1919 registration.

„Tonne“ or „Fass“ is a German word for barrel. Wassertonne / Wasserfass = Water Barrel. „Tonne“ is also ton (weight). Like „lead“ and „lead“. To lead / lead bullets. Same written word, different meaning. I guess Mauser Tonne is a nick name because it looks like a barrel / Tonne

Why not call it what it is, the Mauser logo?

Early on, Mauser started using the 'Schützmarke' phrase with it's logo, showing that they had protected (registered) it.
