Default Taken???

An older friend of mine recently bought a Luger and later brought it to me for a look-see. It is an apparently all-matching (except mag) "42" from 1939, in VG condition. I'm about 99% sure it's been refinished and I have doubts about the grips. The mag has an aluminum base and an E/63, numbered 8213 n.
Can you guys confirm what I see, point out anything else, and give me an idea of what he should have paid?
Thanks.

Sorry about a couple of those pics, I can redo if necessary.

Jonnyc, be 100% sure it's been refinished because it definitely has! This puts this luger into the shooter category with a price range of $400-600 in this lousy economy. Hope your older friend didn't pay more as it's a shame to have an expensive learning experience at an older age! The grips, if original, could be Krieghoff, and might be worth more than the gun!

That's what I figured on the finish. Oh, it also came with a repro black leather holster and loading tool.
Let's hear more about those grips.

Are any of the holes in the back of the grips threaded?

Johnny..The grips are looking better..I am certainly no expert on these but the front sides and the fit look good. The 4 holes being threaded are a good sign..all things considered I would find another pair for the re blued pistol and keep these.

Definitely refinished gun... now shooter class, not collector.

Hard to confirm anything on photographs, but I concur that IMHO these are Krieghoff luger grips and probably worth several hundred dollars.

I would agree with John on the HK grips. I call them Type1 on the Black Grip study over on Jan's Forum.....

Jonny, I have new repro checkered wood or black plastic repros available, starting @$25 + $6 S&H.

The grips are worth more than the pistol.

Johnny..That statement by Dwight and others might be a little misleading..

I would think the pistol might be in the $500-600 range but Krieg grips won't bring that much. At least several years ago I tried to sell a pair just like these for $300 and couldn't get it. Maybe things have changed but not that much?
