M1900 comes and goes at Auction...

Here was yet another Parabellum misidentified at an auction. I had my eye on it as a potential buddy for my Commercial 1900, which I've posted about here, but it sold for more than I wanted to pay/could afford. Comments about its hammer price?

The "Steam Punk" .22 conversion has some competition, I'd say. Does anyone recognize such a setup involving this Lyman sight? I've never seen anything quite like it.

The Lyman style back sight seems to also have provision for a wire type stock.

I'd think that a stock would be a necessity with that tiny diopter of the rear peep. Imagine holding that at arm's length?
The auctioneer refers to it as a 1906 in 9mm. (?)

And the front sight is split...

Barrel looks thin for a 9mm...

20% premium and shipping $1700 flushed down the toilet IMO. Nothing a belt sander & bench grinder wouldn't fix though. Sad end for this once fine handgun.

Different times. The owner(vet) might have gotten the pistol for no money, but not to say he did not pay dearly for it. Or he might have purchased it for a song. The eye of the beholder prevails always, perhaps a piece of Americana to actually be used in days past, could be a lot of stories with it really. You pays your money..........or not.

From the barrel I would guess a 30, but who knows, one can never say never in the gun world. Suspect it has been dropped a time or two.

The rear attached aperture sight is not new in Lugers. The stock(?) attachment is the first for me, perhaps a wire stock affair as noted. I suspect that the front sight is a home brew(?) that at one time had an insert(taller) for the new rear sight enhancement.

Interesting piece from a theoretical point of view.

yeah, but Don - I think the upper receiver is probably worth $400+ - the toggle since its been modified, still harder to find, and close to that amount

The frame itself is harder to find and worth $400 with many parts on it

So, we are up to $1200 and a complete gun should be worth more than its parts.

As Rick said, different times - at one time Georg Luger used one for target shooting - and a Lyman sight would have been the thing to get

I see original 1911 and 1911a1 slides with bomar sights and think, jeez.... But they used sights like these by the US Army shooting team if I remember right?

We sometimes forget that when these guns were new or not long thereafter, they were used by shooters for practical purposes. This gun may have seen service while running a trap line or bringing home a meal or two...in either case accuracy and precision trumped cosmetics.

Rich, I can't see any slots, so it might be either rivets into the holes where the lanyard loop was located, or the remaining legs of the loop turned into impromptu rivets.

They might be cut off segments of the original lanyard loop that have been peened over to secure the sight mount. Not a very elegant modification but hopefully it made the bubba mechanic happy and let him enjoy plinking away with the sight and presumably a shoulder stock to go with it.

I had originally thought that maybe it had some kind of clamp around the lanyard loop but pulling it out and threading the frame is much more likely...

The peep sight base on the Ebbink pic is sitting on top of the lanyard loop; the lanyard holes aren't used...For the peep sight base...And the Lyman/Marbles sight base is dovetailed into the custom Luger base...

I didn't mean that $400 was its "value", only what I would spend on it for a toy.
