My "new" Borchardt just arrived. I wrote a long description of it but lost it trying to put it on the new forum. I gotta go to work now but I will try to recreate the lost description after the hockey game tonight.

All you guys are so good to me. Gotta buy these things to keep up with Murray, Doug and Ron Wood. Actually, the gun came out of GunBroker, item #4003236. The closed auction is still there. I put in one bid at only $25 above the opening bid (no reserve) for $8025 and nobody bid against me. What a surprise. I am just splitting at the gut to tell the world. The pistol arrived today in a brand new Winchester steel case with lock and it is a fine specimen of a 1900 DWM late production. (I guess that I will have to find a 1893 Lowe Borchardt now to beat the other guys and to have a set). Original bluing with holster, shoulder straps, stock and check piece. About 70% strawing on the trigger bar and that is the only strawed part. The only thing wrong is that it has an original but unmatched magazine and the holster is missing the cup that holds the stocks attaching iron. I'll call Jerry on that. Some pitting here and there but not enough to be a problem. The holster and straps stitching is excellent. The holster and straps are old and worn but in good shape considering the age. The shoulder stock wood is great and the iron has some small pitting. The cheek piece is in good shape.
I am looking for magazine #2051 and I have #1968. I already wrote Don Hallock but I happen to know that he doesn't like Borchardts. He thinks their ugly and not really Lugers. But what does he know. [img]smile.gif[/img] It will be a tough find. But if I find it, count on hearing me scream nomatter where you live. I have to play with the new forum to see if there is a classified section. Where is my copy of the last NAPCA? Maybe I'll put an ad in there.
This is different from a Luger and I have to figure out how to disassemble for cleaning and inspection. Anybody with some information on how to disassemble and put back together? The guns a bit intimidating at the moment.
I figured out where the rear hinge pin is. Cute. Also figured out how to **** it. That little safety latch on the toggle is tricky. I found only three full serial numbers on it (no two digits). The trigger, under the barrel (hard to read that one, the trigger guard hides it well) and on the side of the rear toggle. What I think may be the caliber on the side of the barrel is confusing. It is 173,25. It don't sound right. The gun looks 30 caliberish. All the imprints are crisp, but only the markings on the side of the barrel have the halo effect. I wonder what two holes that straddle the extractor are for?
The gun is not as clumsy as the books say it is. The weird butt sort of craddles nicely between the thumb and the trigger finger. But that straight up and down grip feels strange after holding a Luger.
Now I gotta figure out how to store the thing. Its too strange of a shape to store in a regular pistol case. I'll use the new Winchester case for a while.
Incidentally, the Red Wings won the hockey game 3-1 in a boring game. Series tied 1 to 1.
Gotta go for now and play with my new toy.

Gentlemen:

Those of you who were sold and are shooting original DWM Borchardt ammo may have been deceived. I believe that "true" Borchardt ammo was only made by Deutsche Metallpatronenfabrik (albeit owned by Loewe and later transformed into DWM) and Keller & Co. of Austria.

Those are the only Borchardt ammo I choose to shoot.

I believe you are correct, sir! After DWM became an entity in January 1897, the only 7.63 cartridge case headstamp that I have reference for is "466", which is DWM catalogued as "Selbstlade-Pistol Kal. 7,63mm" with no reference to Borchardt or Mauser. Interestingly enough, the bullets for these casings are numbered 203 (203 and 203B through F) and are catalogued as "Selbstladepistol Mauser Kal 7,63". Sure seems that since DWM made most of the Borchardts they would have made cartridges with their "brand", but I have no knowledge of it.

I don't think there is a commercially available round for the Borchardt. Johnny Peppers posted a picture of a box of ammo that, as I recall, was for Mauser and Borchardt pistols, indicating that the same load was compatible with both weapons. But, consider the age of your Borchardt, its value and the consequences if you break it. The mainspring is a complex mess of curves and laminations, and I know of at least one Borchardt with a brazed toggle link that may or may not have been broken by firing with rounds that were not designed for the piece. Perhaps out there in Lugerland there is someone with loading information that would not harm your Borchardt, but I'm not gonna shoot mine. I waited too long to get it and I can't afford another.
