Default 1938 magazine

I have a 1938 Luger with a matching magazine number; however, the numers aren't 63 or 83, they are 37 & 37 and have another number which is 122.
The number on the aluminum bottom appears to be the same as number font on the gun.
Also the number on the inside of the grip is four numbers in one place and the last two in another place. I suppose that is not to unusual. the two number group are larger in size than the four number group.
I would appreciate any guidance on the oddness of these two situations with what appears to be an mall matching gun. the 63and 83 I got from a reference book.

O.K. Can you tell me what the 37 & 37 relate to? the mag is blues and has an aluminum bottom.

Also, any good reason for a 1938 to have black plastic grips?
Thanks

The code 122 mag with the 37s were first used with the 1940 code 42 Luger.

The 1938 Lugers were issued with wood grips. No good reason for black grips.

CAP, If your extruded Schmisser E/37 mag is numbered to your pistol, it is either spurious or may the pistol may be a DDR rework. These were issued with 2 mags (#1 or 2 above serial #) which could have been WW2 mags renumbered to the gun. The large 2 digit serial inside one of your grips is correct for the period, not the 4 digit numbered one. TH

Default Incorrect Mag.

I'm assuming the mag is off by a few years and is spurious. The grips have two sets of numbers. One is large # 85 and seems odd in size and typeface. The other is xx85 and seems more normal in typeface, etc. Maybe neither set is correct-I don't know. I've gotten a refund from the seller for the mag situation and will look for the correct mag.
thanks
Jack
