Default Method of carry?

I recently had the living daylights scared out of me when my .30 caliber Luger slam fired 3 rounds. After cleaning the trigger bar of some buildup and replacing the sear spring it seems to function properly now, and eight rounds later no surprises for me so far.

Needless to say, the gun is very different from modern designs and prompted this question: How the hell did the German Army carry these suckers?! One in the chamber with the safety on? Or perhaps empty chamber full mag? That flap holster wasn't exactly good for "quick draws". Does anybody carry their own Lugers regularly, and how?
