Newby needs help ID'ing 6" Luger

New here so please bear with the ignorance. I had my hands on a Luger today that I had not seen before. It was made by Mauser, had a 6" barrel and Eagle Crest over the chamber. It also had a grip-safety and no stock lug. Can anyone suggest what it is? I am to make an offer to purchase it. Thanks for any help.

Glad you had no problems posting your photo...

What you have there is a 1970's vintage Mauser reproduction of the Swiss luger manufactured for the American market... A fine gun to start with. There are frequently available NEW in the box for somewhere between $700 and 950 depending on who is selling and who is buying... Used would be somewhere between $500 and the starting price for a new one...

Seems like your specimen has some rust and pitting damage... inconsequential on a shooter, you can clean it up, cause it doesn't look like it would warrant a complete reblue...but hardly worth the value of a new one. I would offer $500 and see where it goes from there...

Thanks John, I didn't know they existed and would never have guessed. The gun has been stored in grease (not cosmoline) for years, needs a good scrubbing.

I collect WW1 and WW2 military small arms, these are my two 1917 DWMs. I might grab this 6" until a Navy comes along at a good price to replace it.

Hi Greg,

The luger you are considering to purchase came in both 9 mm and .30 cal...if 9 mm, its serial number would start with 11.xxxxx and if .30 cal, its serial number would start with 10.xxxxx.

You might find you like shooting this 1970's Luger and may want to keep it even when you get a real 6" Navy Luger...those are a bit more rare and prabably not worth the risk of shooting alot.

Hi Jerry B.,

If you switch to the LF section titled "Post WWII Lugers" and look for a discussion I started on 4/2/2004; you will get some good info on these unique holsters...A LF member in France has a 4" version to my 6" version...he posted photos as well. Another LF member posted a copy of a 1970's Interarms catalog he had which showcased these holsters...originally selling for ~ $ 35.00 if I remember right.

I was lucky to find this one laying around a local CA gun shop for only $ 100...I was thrilled to find it...
