Bessler's Web Site...
Can anyone help me access Randy Bessler's web site?
I have been running MS Windows XP and XP Home for several months on 2 desktops and have had no problem "clicking" on the menu/inventory "buttons" that appear on his homepage. But after his 9-12-03 update with the Michael Wayne estate inventory, I can not longer see any of the inventory when I click on the selection buttons... Wondering if others on the LF are having problems today ? Did e-mail Randy and he suggested I ask here on the LF...something to do with "Java applet's"...(are those coffee-flavored fruit snacks...? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> ) Thanks for your help... Regards, Pete... <img border="0" alt="[typing]" title="" src="graemlins/yltype.gif" /> |

Maybe his web master will notice the drop-off in site hits and figure out something is wrong...
Sort of like the gun shop guys that open the shop, stand behind the counters, and wonder why there is no foot traffic in the store for hours. Little to they do know that someone forgot to turn the "closed" sign around to the other side to read "open"... I had hoped that R. Bessler would have jumped all over my complaint... I am running Windows 2000 Pro, which is really just XP, on a fiber optic connection, and I do not have any problems with Randy's site. I will say that the format requires a lot of refreshing after you select each photo and then go back, so if you are using dial-up rather than broadband it would be like watching paint dry.

FWIW, I'm having no problems with Randy's site, with Windows 98 (2nd Version) and a broadband connection.

I run Windows XP Pro with satelite and have no problem with Randy's site.
It is very, very quick to load and do not have to refresh. I might suggest using IE6 for Randy seems to always use leading edge technology on his web pages. I believe that the problem is on the user end, not the site end.

I think that if you are running broadband, you are okay, otherwise, it won't even load?
At least it won't for me, and that is with all security turned off / disabled Ed

I can get the main page on dial up, but the link buttons at the bottom of the page wont display or let me click on them.

I have been on DSL for more than 1 year and have run XP for half that long and never had any problems accessing the inventory buttons on Randy's site. Did lock up regularly after viewing more than 6-8 photos in a row. The day or two before his 9-12-03 update with the M. Wayne inventory, I was on the site and looked at several inventory items.
But right after his update, the inventory buttons are there, but are just red "X"s and they are not active when I click on them... I do not think I changed anything on my end...the only thing that changed was the site update... Of well, I can go elsewhere... Hello Wes,
We use Internet Explorer on both of our desktops. One with MS Windows XP Professional and one with MS Windows XP Home. These browser versions came bundled with the OS packages, so I assume they are pretty current versions... Funny, when I log on with my laptop that is still running MS Windows ME, I have no problem getting to all of Bessler's selection "buttons"...using the same DLS connection and modem... The problem of lack of access for our two desktops really occurred over a 1-day time period; when the new 9-12-03 update appeared on his site... I am certainly not an IT person, but my wife does dabble in the field and she cannot figure it out, either... I do understand Randy being on the leading edge of web technology...but I would guess a lot of gun collecting folks are barely able to keep up with the technology of a year or so ago; if a vendor/seller makes it difficult or impossible for their customers to reach them on the web, then something is amiss, isn't it...? I know we normally do not want to discuss problems we have on another web site on the LF, but since Randy is listed in our Links section and I have continued to hear from other members that they have had access problems all along and now me; I thought we could get to the bottom of this here with the IT folks that hang out on the LF and maybe get back to Randy with our suggestions and findings... I also looked for a "web master" link at the bottom of Randy's site,; thinking I could just work this out with the folks paid by Randy to help out...but could not find such a link... Regards, Pete... <img border="0" alt="[typing]" title="" src="graemlins/yltype.gif" /> |

Pete,
Check your version of IE and I think that you will find that it is v5. I would also download all of the latest updates for XP and install and download updates for IE6. Then check my internet setting options and make sure that Java settings are correct. I am sure that you know all of this, but it never hurts to double check. Then I would trash everything, even if it works and go down to Gateway and purchase a 700X which really smokes.

Wes, I am running IE 6.0.2800 and it never has the java aplets show down below. Obviously some kind of glitch, but it just means that many people can not see Randy's items, of course, I am on his mailing list, so that is almost as good,
Ed

Ed, it may be that that computers with tubes are too slow and the quantity of java applets that are being maintained from the site are too much for an old Pentium I processor.
Of course, my granddad, bless his soul, would never drive a car. Preferred horses, and thought that everyone should stick with horses. Grieved him something fierce whenever they paved the roads to acommodate the autos. Ate up horseshoes. That's progress, I guess.

Hey Guys!
I am really sorry if any of you are still having problems accessing the site. I am not even close to being computer savvy! I had a good friend from Collectors Firearms in Houston fly to NV and spend a week setting up the site and showing me how to add and delete items. I tried to keep it simple and take advantage of the latest technology (now almost a year old!). I think some of the ideas suggested above will work (I hope)! Most have had no problems unless you are on a dial-up. Best! Randy |

Randy,
I am on dialup and have never had a problem accessing your site or viewing the pictures thereon. And it was great to meet you in Reno. --Dwight |
