Post TWO newbie questions??

Having just snagged three Mauser lugers...I am trying to prioritize their quality.

Q1. In short, whould you rather have a piece with a matching mag at 85% or a 95+% gun with m/m mag??

Q.2. I read about "straw" and assume this is the percent of buff color remaining on the grips? is this correct? and how desirable is this in assessing quality?

Bob, Always preferable to me is an original matching mag.

Straw is the golden color of various metal parts on early Lugers that were not blued but heat treated to a gold or straw color. Trigger, safety lever,takedown lever to name a few. Made the pistol look very striking but has nothing to do with the wood grips.

Q1, I don't "have to have matching magazines, but would rather;
1. Have a matching mag gun compared to a non-matching mag gun
2. Have a gun with real history than some gun that has sat in the desk drawer (but unless it has real provenance, then I would take a 95% gun over a 85% gun anyday, you can always find a magazine made in the same time period, i.e. a 7245b gun and find a b magazine later

Jerry amswered the strawing part for Q2

Takedown Lever, thumb safety, magazine release button, trigger, ejector were normally strawed on many 1900-1937 Lugers and a very few after 1937.
