New to Luger

Good evening all,

I have now just joined the ranks of Luger owners. I have very little experience with the Luger other than what I have read here and elsewhere. I wanted to get one to shoot, not to just sit in a safe.

I just purchased a Luger and the info I have been given by previous owner:

Russian Capture (crossed rifles)
DWM Toggle action (did not mfg in 1941)
1941 Slide
Mis-matching numbers
The 3 marks on the slide have been ground off but not completely
One Nazi mark on barrel still visible but very faint
Aftermarket magazine (which has to have the heaviest spring I have ever encountered)
No import marks ( I have taken it all the way down to look/clean)
No electropencil marks/forced matching

I believe from what I have seen the above is true. IHe was asking $475 but picked up for less.

I have not seen any Lugers for that price recently. How does it shoot? Enjoy it!

I haven't shot it yet so I don't know. I know I will probably need another aftermarket mag since this one is so strong, I can barely get 8 rds in the mag. Heck, five is hard to do. Any suggestions on a decent aftermarket that doesn't cost a lot?

Dennis,

You need a loading tool. All Luger magazines have stiff springs. It's required for reliable function.

Sounds like one hell of good price.

The gun may function better with the strong mag. spring, so do not discount it completely yet. And jamming in 8 rounds is not always a good idea. Unless you are surrounded, of course.
MecGar mags. are the standard for aftermarket mags.
Nice looking shooter at a great price. Ya' done good.

OK, maybe a dumb question, was the mag designed to hold eight? Also, a loading tool is needed you say? Makes sense. Do they cost alot? Can I find them at gunshows or do I need to order from the gun shop?

Welcome to the Forum. Get hold of Luger Doc, also a Forum member. He carries magazines, and at a very fair price. After you have loaded a couple of magazines by hand, you will welcome having the loading tool. You can find them on e-bay, it dosen't have to be an original. I bought two!

I originally tried and succeded in getting eight rounds in the magazine. Had all kinds of problems with jamming and stove piping. Save yourself a lot of grief and start with five or six.

I have had and continue to have success with brass casings and 115g Full Metal Jacket. Some will say that you should use 124g. I have also used steel casings and they worked O.K. Here again, 115g workes great for me.

Check out your local Walmart, they usually carry 9mm ammo. Maybe buy a box of 115g and 124g and see which you like best. Some swear by the Winchester white box ammo. It's your gun, have fun with it.

Finally, keep watching this Forum. There is a huge amount of knowledge and know how avaliable here..
