More photos, byf 42 Is it refinished?
A few weeks ago I posted a photo of my 42 byf and asked if it had been refinished. I got some very knowledgable responses, but some said they needed more information.
Several said the absence of a scratch next to the safety lever was a good indication that it had been refinished. There is a very fine silver scratch where the safety lever travels, which is not picked up in the photo. I tried to post some more pictures, but was too stupid to get it right. I think I have it straight now. Following are three more views, starting with the right side. Thanks, Jerry http://wsphotofews.excite.com/007/S5/qr/LH/FX46374.jpg |

Left with safety off.
I am really happy with this Luger, which was manufactured around the time I was born, regardless of whether it is refinished or not. I have no interest in parting with it, but I would appreciate input from the experts on this forum. Thanks, Jerry http://wsphotofews.excite.com/003/Ho/Kb/YY/FT52822.jpg |

Re: More photos, byf 42 Is it refinished?
Jerry,
It appears that there has been some rust pitting on the barrel, Which were not polished out. Also it appears that there is blue in the pits. Look closely with a strong magnifying gless to determine if this is so. And if blue appears in the pits then it has definitly been reblued. Hard to tell from a photo or scan, even as good as these are. ViggoG |

Re: More photos, byf 42 Is it refinished?
I can not see any pits, but Viggo offers sound advice if you find any. It looks like a nice near mint 99% Luger to me with the light machine marks you want to see in the byf Lugers. One can never tell absolute form any photo but this one sends no indicators to me that it is a re-blue. It is sad but true that these days the weight of expert opinion on the originality of a given firearms finish tend to be directly correlated to whether you are the seller or the buyer! I think you have a very nice example.

Jerry: If it was refinished it sure as hell was done by an expert. I would be happy to have the gun think some guys are just sorry they don't own it. My2 cents worth.

Re: More photos, byf 42 Is it refinished?
Viggo, Tracy, bcc and Dok,
Thanks, guys. I appreciate your opinions. I looked at the pits through a magnifying glass and they do not appear to have blue in them. I bought this in May, 1999 from Ray's Sport Shop in Plainfield, NJ where it was on consignment. I paid $695 plus tax. That may be high, but this is New Jesrey. I didn't know anything about Lugers back then. They had several, and I picked the best looking in my price range. Got lucky, I guess. Sorry if the image is too big. I scanned it to try to obtain sufficient resolution for evaluation. Thanks for your patience. Jerry |

No blue in the pits, seems to me its not a refinish job and an "OK" deal.

Re: More photos, byf 42 Is it refinished?
The absence of a 'scratch' on the area between the safety (and this should be fairly noticeable) and the fire position is highly unusual. The stamps seem nice a deep and sharp. It is a nice looking pistol. I would think that if you viewed it in the sun you would be able to tell more readily if it was refinished. As you stated that you are not trying to sell it then it should stand as a good deal. If you want to send it to have it appraised it might give you better piece of mind. I would say that you got a good deal either way. Also, I prefer the full size pics. If you can post full size please do. Cropping and scaling reduce the clarity of the picture.

EXCELLENT PHOTOS - don't reduce the size! What camera did you use?
Any member that wants to be able to see the photo in it's entirety and does not have a large monitor can just save the photo and them paste it into any MS-Word document and scale it to their hearts content...
Eve if you have to slide the photo around, these photos provided GREAT detail and sharp focus. What camera / scanner did you make them with please? -John Sabato |

Re: I think that your BYF has been refinished...
I do still belive the gun is all original.
THe rounded top on the lugers is probably made by hand on a beltsander. The terrible beltsander is really one of the fauvorite machines in a gunfactory. When i was working in Voere in Austria they bought 10000 K98 from Jugoslavia and rebuilt to huntingrifles. All those actions went in to the beltsander and got all the stampings and machiningmarks removed. It didnt take many minutes for the experinced grinder to do it. Re: I think that your BYF has been refinished...
John and Hakan, Thanks for your input.
I used a UMAX Astra 3400 scanner with Adobe Photo Delux software. The Luger was covered with white bond paper for a uniform background, and scanned as a color photo. I was also pleased with the way it came out and plan to scan other guns the same way. A cheapo digital camera is also available, but the scanner seems to have better light quality and produces better resolution than the camera. Jerry |
