Pls STOP the Madness!!!
All,
There have been several instances of late when members of both this and Jan Still's forum have contacted me about purchases they have recently made. Inevitably they state want my opinion or my validating their purchase. Equally inevitably, they do NOT * really*want my opinion, they wish to have me validate their multi-thousand dollar purchase. Mebbe they feel that they can alabi spending the bucks to the lil' woman by saying, "Tom A. said it was a righteous gun at a great price!". Who knows. I can state with certainty I ALWAYS ask them to do one or more of the inspection procedures I have published and which are posted permanently at the head of this subset of the LF. In each case thus far encountered, the inquisitive new purchaser either refuses to conduct the test(s) and procedures, or does not reveal the result by breaking off communications. I do not object to such people refusing to close the communications loop; gawd knows I get enough e-mail anyway. What I do strenuously object to however, is the primae facie example of deliberate self delusion demonstrated by their establishing contact with me- causing me to fritter time away attempting to elaborate, enlighten, teach and share some of the things I have learned-often through painful and expensive experience-in my 46 years of collecting Lugers, then FAILING to act on it or ignoring it all together. I attribute this to childishness at best, rudeness and self delusion at worst. My bottom line here, folks, is simple. If you can't stand the answer, don't ask me the question. A second point is, the best way to avoid "buyer's remorse" , is to ask a knowledgable and experienced collector or three BE-friggin-FORE drinking the Kool-Aide that a charismatic salesman is dispensing. As I have noted often, the tuition at Luger U. is expensive and getting more so. Please take advantage of the resources available here BEFORE writing a check. Here endeth the rant. Let the flames begin!! Tom A. |

yes, I have "asked" Tom his opinion, sometimes later at night. I have gotten good answers and bad answers (of what I wanted to hear), but always HONEST answers. so....
That said, I think if you're in the game and a so-called expert (because we all are still learning) in a certain area, you've got to expect the occasional (?) bump on the log who just won't listen. I experienced this a couple of months ago, guy asked my opnion, numerous times and then failed to listen. Of course he got more on gunbroker than if he'd used my advice / interpretation of markings

You can't get flamed on the Lugerforum Tom! Especially when all you have dispensed is the rock steady advice you have given for years as a professor here at Luger U.
... Folks you can't lay the blame on Tom for not following his advice... Happy Easter Tom.

I like the 2nd paragraph.
People's purpose is unexplainable... why consult Tom A. after buying, not before buying? |

Tom, I feel your pain. The messenger is often blamed. I get more or less the same thing coming to me on holsters. Often the more astute petitioners heed the advice and I say a pox on those who don't! You can only lead a horse to water not shove his head under.

You can lead a horse to water, but you shouldn't have to stick your head up its arsch and suck to make it drink.

Read Tom's post again.... actually, a better way could be -- novice attacks a gun, and let experts defend it.

Jerry,
My fellow paratrooper, if you stick the jackass' head under water, PETA will object (in the case of real asses); for humankind, one will be accused of being unfeeling or insensitive... It is a tough load to bear either way, but I will do my best to measure up. Tom A |
