Old Leupold
Greetings,
I recently acquired what appears to me to be a very old Leupold scope. I say old because other Leupold scopes I have or had have either Leupold Vari XII or XIII. This one has only Vari X 3X9. NO 1, 2 or 3. In addition, no gold ring. It might have wore off. Also, the serial number has no prefix letter. The serial number is 44813. I have gone to the Leupold website but all the dated examples have a letter suffix or prefix. Any assistance will be appreciated. Thanks, Mike |

A 3-9 Vari-X Leupold came out in 1961. Was gone by 1964 and replaced by the M-8 and VariX 2.in 1965. This information came from a book called Old Rifle Scopes by Nick Stroebel. Bill

My most sincere apologies for the delayed reply. I purchased a 1959 Harley Davidson Hummer. I had an identical one when I was 16 years old. Now, at age 72, I had to have it back. Of course that's impossible, so I purchase one that I found in Lubbock Texas. It had been stored in the back bedroom of a home for over 40 years. A 91 year of Lady was living there and her family was moving her. A real estate agent purchased the home and put the Harley on eBay. It arrived here by freight in September. Since then it has taken up most of my time. It had not run in over 50 years. I completely rebuilt the motor. New cables, wires, paint etc. The odometer reads 867 miles but due to all the years of neglect it was in need of all of the above and more.
But back to the scope, I did sent it to Leupold. It has not yet been returned, but the Leupold rep told me it was made in 1959; same year as the Harley. He also said they would repair any obvious damage and do a complete restoration no charge. Thanks the replies and assistance, Mike |
