Artillery holster question
I have a 1916 dated artillery holster with a unit mark of B A III. On the inside of the flap above the 1916 date is appears to be BERL or SERL but it was very hard to read. The unit mark, date and whatever the other word is are stamped into the holster.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the unit marking and who BERL or SERL might be? Thanks, Brent B. |

Brent, the BAIII indicates that the holster was ditributed by Bekleidungsamt III. According to most thinking, this would be the Supply depot of the Third Army Corps. As to the maker's mark, I would think that your BERL is part of BERLIN, there were quite a few saddlers in the capital.

George:
Thank you for the quick reply. I'm still trying to figure out how one would pronounce that long B word!! Overall the holster is in pretty decent shape with a few scuffs and I've got a stock and the attaching leather on it. It always draws a crowd at the shooting range. Thanks again, Brent |
