Default byf - 42 vet bring back

got this one apx. 45 years ago - came in a p38 holster , vet claimed it was kept in draw til he sold it to me - my question is , at range other day had another member look it over + stated that grips are not original - opinions please

Robert,

The grips are definitely not original. Note the poor fit and wide flat area around the grip edges. Original grips are contoured to meet the edge of the grip frame, checkered right to the edge. In addition, note the new and unworn appearance of the grips compared to the wear on the grip frame.

thanks for the reply - checked with 94 year old vet + he said that those grips were on it when he retrieved it from surrender pile - could they be war time replacements ? - there are no numbers inside the grip panels -

Good possibility and how cool the vet is still alive! If you haven't, I'd consider getting a statement from him about how and where he got it and any good stories to accompany; and pics of course.

he still has his uniform but can not find capture papers - will get more details - he is still active + sharp as is my 93 years father in law who served in WWII -

Looks honest except for the grips. Would be nice to see phhotos of the top of the pistol for the date and toggle markings. Also a picture of the inside of the grips would be interesting. I know nothing about WW2 replacement grips. If the vet says they were on there they got there somehow in theater.

all numbers matching except for grips + FXO magazine - grips were very dirty when i acquired pistol - yhey were cleaned by me with lacquer thinner IIRC -
