Post flaming bomb

I was reading American Rifleman today and saw a interesting question.A gentleman has a Stevens Model 87m 22cal rifle, and he was asking this question, "ON the reciever is the following"US"(followed by the "flaming bomb")and a "diamond" shaped mark.In front of the rear sight is:"Ranger 101.16."The stock has"RIA" in small letters stamed mid-way on the left side.Could you please identify this rifle and advise me of any history about this gun?" The answer came back that this was a gun that was purchased by the Army Ordnance Corps and was used as a trainer and that the "RIA" mark stood for Rock island arsenal. Unfortunatly they dont talk about or show the flaming bomb proof. My question is there an American flaming bomb proof, and a german, or is this one a fake.Is there more U.S. equitment marked with this?

Forum Members,
We hear much about the US Ordinance Flaming Bomb Proof Mark.
I finally Photographed My

" US "
" Springfield "
" Armory "
" Model of 1922 "
" M1. Cal. .22 "

I believe that this indicates that the barrel was manufactured at "Springfield Arsenal" and accepted at "Springfield Armory" in the fifth month or "May of 1925"

Hope this finds a place in the permanent files !

What many folks are calling a "flaming bomb" on Lugers, is an inspector's mark that consist of an upward facing semi-circle over a circle, not the actual US marking shown above. Tom H.

I think this mark is covered in a book or two? (German marking), if so, then we can compare the two, I will add Viggo's picture to the FAQ I am slowly adding to.

Thank you all for clearing that up for me.I have added the U.S. proof to my files.I was wondering if someone could post the german proof in question, or tell me what book I could find it in.

This December posting had pictures (had, because with the servers being changed, they dropped out), and a long discussion on this.

I tried to find pictures, but was unable to find real pictures, only drawings in Mr. Jones' Luger Variations.
