Default Mainspring Question

I have a "shooter" Luger that I posted some pictures of in another thread that apparently is a parts gun made from an old Erfurt frame. The mainspring may be a little soft since it jams a shell casing on occasion.

Any tips on replacing the mainspring? I hear they can be a problem to put back in. Are there any tools that you would recommend to compress the spring?

Thanks!

I use a punch just big enough to go through the hole at the bottom of the strut, a third hand would be helpful, but not nessary. Simply brace the frame, with the punch through the hole you can get a two sided grip and compress and unhook, this is where the third hand is nice. really not as hard as some make it out to be....to replace spring, use same punch and again brace frame and compress spring until it hooks....use a large well padded vice, and invite a friend to help you.

Default mainspring

I just got a WW 2 mainspring for an application where I need to cut it down......I need a weaker one for a .30 cal gun....might be beneficial to both of us to trade????????

Thanks for the tip! I'll let you know how it turns out.

PJ....

I have a mainspring on the way from Tom Heller but wouldn't mind a good replacement since I have no use for the one I am going to take out.

Send me an email mark@p38guns.com

Mark et al, I've posted your 9mm new Mauser Parabellum main spring. It is more compact than the WW1s or 2s, and easier to install. Regardless of what spring that you use, I suggest first threading the spring on the guide, BEFORE installing it into the frame. TH

Tom,

Thanks for the advice! The parts just walked through the door. I'll be shootin' Lugers this weekend for sure.

Mark, I wrote a tutorial on how I change them. See it at http://www.lugerforum.com/Mainspring_Install.html

I replaced the mainspring on my shooter early Saturday morning at 8AM . With only one cup of coffee in me, some breakfast and a few tools I got the mainspring in the frame in about 6 minutes. However, when I compressed the spring I used a small rubber mallet to help tap the spring in the frame when I compressed it on the floor and it actually hooked the recoil lever so I skipped the last step in the instructions.

THANKS TED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UPDATE_________

Today I was at the range and put 200 rounds through two Lugers, I am becoming addicted ... have had a P.38 addiction for over ten years and now I am addicted to Lugers. 1911's were my first addiction, should I seek professional help?

What should I do? Can I lose my carry permit because I am an addict?

HELP!!!!

Mark

No you should not seek help. Sounds like you are doing just fine. So, just sit back and enjoy the ride!
