Where are all the Navy guys?
What's happened, no discussion about Navies. Surely we can get an interesting string going again. The only one I have is a 1908 and I was trying to learn as much as I can from you guys before the discussion stopped.

So Larry, a 1908 Navy... Did I miss the photos and discussion about yours sir? How can I learn if you don't share
Really, I bet you know a lot more than I do on Navy's???? And yes, more discussion of them would be interesting, I bet there are lots of colelctors like you that have one or two (or none like me) and a discussion and pictures of actual proofs would be interesting!

This Navy collector (and moderator of this part of El Forum Ville), is on assignment trying to keep a client from going on the equivalent of a business venture kamikaze flight. Spent a couple of weeks in Richland Washington (Motto: At least we aren't Seattle!) and am working ungodly hours.
After scoring my 1904, I have been somewhat Navy saturated and satiated. If anyone is interested, pictures are posted in owner's gallery. Tom A. |

My 1908 is almost a twin to the pics Tom posted last month and only a few numbers from his. The only difference between the two is mine does not have Germany stamped on the barrel. I really prefer the WW1 Lugers to WW2. The finish and bluing is so much better than the later ones. The Navy is the only long frame Luger that I have. I can't afford to collect all of the different variants, still have a kid in college. You must set your goal to acquire a Navy. A Luger looks better with a 6" barrel. larry |

You are right, the six inch barrel is sweet.
I have one, although just a new six inch barrel onto a rework, but it has a nice look to it. It is posted under ET's Toys in the member gallery. One day I'll get a Navy

Can't speak for all of them, but this Navy guy is hanging out in Artilleries. Too few Navies left to find, so the next category of long-barrel Lugers whose cost is going up way too fast is LP-08.

Hi Guys:
I'm a 1914 Navy kind of guy. I only have ONE authentic 1917 Navy. The reason we see so little about the Navy is because a lot fewer were made than book would have you believe. I love the 6" barrel. I have a 6" non-navy shooter. My prize is a beautifully crafted Swiss with a 6" barrel. All Lugers should have been made with the 6" barrel. It just looks so good! I'm guilty for not having posted for awhile. I thought I would find more going on here too. Dan

Dan,
in the spirit of generating some discussion in this category, could you expand a bit on your comment about the number of Navys manufactured? --Dwight |

I agree with Dan. All Lugers should be 6 inch barrels. Its a bit like Goldielocks and the three bears. The 4 inch is too short and the 8 inch is too long. But the 6 inch has just that right balance and feel. The sight has just the right adjustment. The only thing that makes it not perfect is that does not have the adjustible front sight.
As far as production numbers are concerned, I don't trust them anyway. Anybody who has seen John Sabato's picture of a large mound of WW1 pistols that were destined for the ovens after the war, has got to realize that production numbers don't matter much. You still have to hunt for what you want. Then there are the counterfeit Lugers... Big Norm |

I suspect that most of the Navy collectors are still drooling over the pics of Tom A's M1904.

I agree - the 6" Luger looks 'just right'. I posted some photos of my 1906 1st pattern (altered) 'Gouv. Kaiu' at http://gallery.rennlist.com/lugergallery/album38
Enjoy! Steve <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" /> |

Hi Guys:
I have read that the number of model 1914 Navy's was smaller than previously published. A lot of books say 35,000 to 40,000 were built. Based on the number of Navy personnel, the 35 to 40k would have been to high according to the article I read. Based on the number of authentic model 1914 Navy's, I would agree that fewer were made than book writers have estimated. I do not know just how many model 1914's were actually made so I am not the person you should be asking. The model 1914 was made in 1917 and 1918 and were dated 1916 and 1917. As I recall, some order was cancelled as the reason fewer were made. I'll look in my books again to see if I can find out where I read that. A few of us have spent some time studying the model 1914 Navy in some detail. Many of us now know the differences between authentic model 1914's and those that wished they were authentic. Sorry I can't be of more help. Dan

Sorry guys,
I like 4 inch barrels, they hold real steady for me--Lugers and revolvers. With my progressive shooting glasses, sights and target are all in focus (maybe it's my eyes). Anyway I vote for 4" and I have 3 of them to prove it.

Hi, I'm a brand new member of this august group. I recently acquired a 1917 dated navy. If there is any information about it that you would like to know, please ask. On the other hand, what should I look for to determine authenticity and/or originality of individual parts, e.g. grips? Were grips on navies always numbered to the gun?
Thanks for any info you can provide. Bruce |

Hi
I like the four inch WW-11 Mauser Navy Lugers. Anybody have any 1939 dates they would like to trade off. I'm also collecting some data on these WW-11 pistols. I have a ton of serial numbers and related information on the 1906, 1908 and 1914 Navies. Ask and I'll check the records. Good hunting Don |
