Re: Whatz thiz?
Just a educated guess !
from the orientation of the usual markings that appear on aluminum based Mag's , I would say that this photo is upside down , which would make the figure more resembling of a "W" . However I think that it is not . just a feeling but I seem to see more than a simple letter figure . Can you e-mail me "off line" a high definition scan ,perhaps 700 DPI or more , this may expose what I think I see . Im not saying as to not influence others . ViggoG viggogdereng@juno.com |

Re: Whatz thiz?
Hugh,
Just a wild guess on my part too, but since the original numbers have been buffed off, and the "M" or "W" has been added, I would speculate that it is definetly post war and may have been done here in this country. I have seen a number of magazines that came in recently (from the Eastern Block) that had the S/N and Waffenamts buffed off. In addition, the letter appears to be more "modern" type style with no serefs. It just looks like a heavy duty type stamp from a modern US type stamp. I wonder if it may be a past owners initial? Just my opinion. Marvin |

Re: Whatz thiz?
Hi Hugh,
I have no idea what the letter (?) is or what it represents. Normally the letter suffix is at the spine of the magazine, not the front. Most of the time if there is something where your letter is, it is a Simson Eagle, or a Police Number, or Police Property Mark. Your mark does not look like any of these. Sorry I can't be of any help. |

Re: Here is a better picture
Hugh, I agree that your photo probably is showing this mark upside down. It looks to me like one of Ted's "spider bite" rework marks. Tom

Re: Mexico
The "Mexico" stamped bottomed PO8 mags were triple Ks earliest. Made at least 20 years ago.

Mark identified!
Thanks for all who offered opinions, suggestions, etc in attempting to identify the mark on my mag. I now have authenticated identification from a renowed collector of Lugers whos name I shall not reveal for obvious reasons. Aparrantly I am the proud owner of a "one of a kind" mag manufactured especially for Ronald McDonald. This mark was originally the McDonalds "arch over M" but some idiot buffed the arch off when they buffed the serial number off.

Re: Mark identified!
There may be more here than first meets the eye !
Do not the "Arches" seem to end too abruptly to have been partially ground away . As that would leave the "Arches" tapering off at their ends and sort of fading out . Could it be that this is all that there ever was of the McDonald Emblem and the serial no 1 is the first one produced . Probably not , looks to rough for a Presentation Magazine . Just thinking again . ViggoG |
