new member needs help from experts

Just joined the forum I have been trying to research a luger for days and it loks like you could spend a lifetime studying them and never identify all the different models. I am a small time collector and add a gun when I find something interesting. I have in my possesion a Luger that has been owned for a long time by a man that is a non gun person and wants to sell the gun to me but wants me to make an offer and I have no idea what the gun is worth. I am pretty sure it is a 1904 to 1908 navy Luger . Before everyone starts asking fo pics I can't do it. Three years ago I had a heart attack and within a month I had three strokes. Short story, I suffered complete memory loss including not knowing my Wife, two adult Daughters, five Grandchildren or anyone. I was in a wheelchair for two years then a walker and now my custom walking stick. I have tried for entire nights trying to post pictures and can't do it. I realy need to talk with someone and describe the pistol and markings and I have two pictures in my laptop that I can email to anyone. Welcome aboard, Garrell!

Can you tell us where you are located so that a member who lives nearby can perhaps help you personally?
Norm is our resident Navy expert and might be able to tell you much more through a detailed description of the markings, although photos are always best, of course.

Garrell, welcome to the forum.

I'm sure that you have read enough to know that Navy model Lugers are rather rare, quite valuable and often faked by assembling and marking parts from similar pistols.

For that reason alone, I don't think I'd try to engage this purchase based on photographs and opinions from the forum. We have the experts on these pistols here. The problem is that you often have to have a pistol in hand to be sure.

Even after review of well photographed pictures on the forum, I'd still recommend that you have the Luger professionally appraised prior to making an offer.

Garrell has sent me two rather poor photos of his Navy Luger, which appears to be a 1906 1st altered. He tells me that the frame is numbered #6377, the barrel #6476, and the take-down and side-plate #32. Because of his unfortunate disability, he is reluctant to try field stripping the gun, so we won't know if the receiver is numbered to the barrel, which is usually the case. He is thinking of offering on the Navy and the Colt in the photos, and wonders whether the Navy is worth $500.00. I told him that , despite it's poor condition and the mismatched parts, it's worth at least twice as much. Opinions, anyone? Regards, Norm

I seem to remember mismatched Navy shooters bringing around $1700. They seem to be on the top of the food chain when it comes to Lugers and Luger shooters. And they do make great shooters...

I concur on the Navy value... around $1700 if it is functional. The Colt is even nicer. Looks like a really nice one!
