Default My other New acquisistion 1920/21

Hello. Here are some photo's of my second pistol. Numbers match, but as you can see it has been blued and the grips have been replaced. Any information on the stamp on the front of the grip would be appreciated. Also on some good reference books to purchase about Lugers. Thanks JVH

You have a Police Luger with both the sear & mag safety.
In the book History Writ in Steel by L. Donald Maus on page 320 the Ma. marking may be from the district of Marienwerder in Ostpreuben. The number is the weapon number.
Hope this helps.

Congrats on this one, too. Sometimes police Lugers were refinished, but whoever did this job was quite heavy-handed with the buffing, which is why the serial number on the front of the frame, as well as the unit marking, look a little "faded."

Intact mag safeties aren't encountered very often, so that is a plus for collectibility, but the improper refinish is certainly a minus. Re-strawing the small parts would make it look better, and you can do that in a toaster oven!

The smooth replacement grips are actually attractive, but check on their back sides to see if they were original, numbered to the gun, and had their checkering removed. If so, sometimes it's possible to re-establish the pattern and make it look closer to original.

We hope to see more pics when it reaches home.

I can't be sure but it appears that the mag safety has been deactivated by clipping off the trigger block.

Since publication of HWIS, the identity of the Ma. marking has been identified as being from the Schupo of Mannheim in Baden. See item 9 on this page: http://www.historywritinsteel.com/New_Insights.html.

I note that this pistol has a circled S on the left side of the receiver as is the case with all other observed P08s from Mannheim.

A very interesting pistol.
