Hi. I checked out the site and then registered so I could read the forums here. Great site. I do not own any lugers...yet. Always liked the history aspect and the look of the pistol. Thanks to all for sharing their knowledge...it will come in handy when I deceide to buy.

That condition of "not owning any lugers" will cure itself if you spend any time here at all. Quite contagious... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

If you haven't already, browse the Member's Gallery for for lots of lugers, hoslters, etc. The source of the luger contagion is suspected to spread from there...

When you are ready to buy, ask yourself if for your first, do you want one to shoot or a high value collector piece? I would recomend getting a lower priced shooter. Then you can have fun and learn how to take it apart and have it for a visual aid when you are reading your books. Depending on your luck and location, one can usually be found for $300.00 -$600.00. In that price range you do not need to worry about fake stamps and other cheating. Then decide if you want a high value piece.

A good set of e-books is available from the Technical Information link at the left. For about $9.00 each they are hard to beat for a starter library. The author created the animation on the home page of this forum!

Buy BOOKS first, then go to shows and museums. Buy more books, get to know collectors...then the awful time of decision arrives: which lugers do I want to collect?

You can't own 'em all; hell, you can't even know enough to be expert in a couple or three variations...so, choose your poi..uh, hobby..carefully.

Hey Zombie..!

Welcome!!! Wow - there is some great advice in this thread!!!

I'd also suggest having a "plan" for collecting? What that means is see as many Lugers as you can - gun shows, dealers, - even pictures in books or photo essays on this site - where ever.

I think from there - you'll focus on a variation or "theme". That is typically a personal preference - some folks enjoy early Lugers, some Swiss, some like "Imperial" Lugers (WW1), etc. etc. (By the way - some "themes are one of each!!!! Yikes!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> ) Having a "focus" will help you narrow your initial research in this field - and Lugers are a HUGE area of study, so focusing on a few - or even one variation - initially may make it easier to digest all the information. To be honest - I've been primarily focused on a very specific variation for over 15 years, and I'm still researching and learning.

Also - and perhaps as important......

Finding a local collector to you would be a huge benefit - and many collectors will take someone new under their wing, and offer advice and what to look for, how to judge a piece, etc. In some ways - this Forum does that for many of the Members - but there is nothing like a "hands on" and first hand experience with an experienced collector. As a side benefit, some of these collectors may pass on pieces they are upgrading to you, thereby lessing the risk that your first few pieces are incorrect - and if they are - you will know what's wrong with them BEFORE you buy them...

As an example of how we on this forum work together, pls see the thread in the Kreighoff section.

The gist of it is, based on my respect for John D.'s expertise on Krieghoffs, I sent a check in the very high 4 figures to someone I had never met, based on John's recommendations on a gun I had never seen. Oh, I have never met John D. either! But I have sent him some most excellent sipping whiskey.

In any event, I think I now have one of the finest 1943 Krieghoff rigs in the world. I KNOW I have a good and trusted friend in John and many others on this board. You could do a whole lot worse than this group; it works for one simple reason: people here are more concerned with their standing in this community than making $1.98 on a transaction.

Stick around, talk to people...get your feet wet..you will enjoy this checkbook-draining addiction...and you will do it with some of the most exceptionally decent, honest and helpful people you will ever meet.

Aww - thanks Tom... I mean that - but, I think just about anyone on the Forum would assist another Member the same way, in my mind. If I was looking at Navies - I'd ask if you'd assist, and would absolutely trust you, your experience and knowledge as well. It's sort of what this little area of the Internet is all about in my mind. I know I'm not alone....

Now - not you give you a swelled head about your 1943 RIG - it is the single best double-matched MAG 1943 RIGS it's been my pleasure to examine - and there are precious few of them known and verified as returned (rather then assembled post-war)... It's a keeper.

As well, I was pleasantly surprised when Mr. Still provided some photos and his observations on his Forum which overall, cooberated my analysis. I had no idea he had the opportunity to look at it first hand - which is terrific. In my mind - that too - is what this "collecting" thing is all about.
