...on Hermann Historica web site that went for a gavel-down price of $ 2700 Euros or $ 3460 USD.

Seemed like a nice LP-08 rig (Persian...?)...

Jerry Burney (lugerholsterrepair) makes exact reproductions. Original lanyards are extremely rare.

Doug Smith of FGS is a big time as well as a long time collector of Lugers once told me that it would be nearly impossible to find a 'mint' Persian artillery. He said that when they wanted to get rid of them on the open market, they just threw them in boxes and shipped them out to market outside their country. No special care was given. No attempt to match magazines or anything. So whenever I see a very nice one, such as the one that is displayed in the above picture, I get very suspicious about a restoration job having been done on it.

All,

There are a number of things wrong with this group; perhaps the biggest and all inclusive flaw is that it is a mix of indigenous and German produced piece parts. The "indigenous" pieces closely resemble the goatskin stuff that has been coming out of Pakistan for the last 20 years or so. In a word, bogus.

Having owned an exceptionally nice example many years ago, I can tell the group that the *original* holsters and mag carriers were of the highest quality German cowhide, very thick and nicely tanned to a cigarette tobacco color. The mag pouch was also very similar to the old favorite with a tear shaped strap attached midway to the body, NOT the full length strap as depicted.

Lastly, I have grave doubts about the lanyard. It appears to be a Portuguese contract lanyard from the 1943-44 period. I have no recollection of lanyards being part of the Iranian contract. Perhaps someone can set me straight on this.

I agree with Tom on the Persian accoutrements. The lanyard is a dead ringer for one I bought from a private museum some years ago. I thought at the time, and still do, that it was WWI German issue. I bought it attached to a 1916 P08.

Given the above mentions by TomA and George Anderson as well as my concerns, I would wonder if this rig was worth $3460 USD. I was looking at a couple of Simpsons and one of Doug Smiths that they had for sale at about $4600-4800 and I was concerned about the guns physical condition. They were original, but rough. Too bad that I didn't pay more attention to the leather. But I had made up my mind on the Lugers and their prices and decided to pass.

But a question that I have is 'Do the Persian holsters have any special markings on them?'.

All:
I have a persian rig as shown above. Stock and gun have matching numbers, Holster and straps may be made of camel hide, funky smell. Holster has a "Farsi" 3 on the back in the upper right hand corner. Stock shows no evidence of remounting (no extra screw holes}. Bender's, Luger Holsters and Acc, page 366-367 shows rig like mine with long strap on mag pouch. Original? Were the holsters made in Germany Or Iran? Mine does not have a lanyard.

Ken, don't discount what you have based on posts here. Your piece may well be correct. I will be in Louisville tomorrow. I'd be happy to look at it and I am not shopping.

Gentlemen, As many of you know I started out making Luger lanyards many years ago and have studied them whenever possible ever since. My Paratrooper Comrade,Tom Armstrong asked me if I knew anything about repairing Luger holsters.Since I was making leather lanyards I decided to give it a try since Frank DeMauro had died.

The Lanyard pictured here seems to be original German Military of the WW1 era. I cannot say for absolute certain without observing the details close up. It is certainly made on that pattern and style so it looks correct.

Yes, I still make Luger Lanyards for shooters. They are very much like the originals, brass swivels, leather attachment tab, brass stud with hand hammered washer and rivet with round leather strap. Even though I could make one exactly like the German issue I don't, I saw one of these appear on auction as an original and this left a bad taste. I know my work when I see it.

Yes, Original Lanyards are quite rare here in the U.S. but relatively common in collections in Europe. I have many action photo's of soldiers wearing them and many close ups of lanyards in European collections. They were an important accoutrement for Stosstrup Soldiers in no mans land as well as Cavalry troops and Motorcycle troops. Anywhere it was possible to drop your Luger in the dark one would be useful.
