Need help w/purchase question
Hi, I'm interested in a Luger that my local shop has for sale. I don't have many details yet other then it is a WW I Luger. I'm going to go check it out today, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for to see if there price is on the mark or not, does anyone have any advice in what I should be looking at?
Thanx, matt |

Matt,
Your potential purchase could have a very wide price bracket depending on many factors... How much are they asking? Here are some of the factors: Overall remaining original condition and finish Whether or not it has ever been refinished Whether or not all the parts have matching serial numbers Does the magazine serial number match the pistol? Are there any original accessories? Mechanical condition? ...just to name a few. I suggest you go to the General Information Link on the left frame of the home page and download an print out the Identification sheets to know what things to find out. Then visit the shop and answer all the questions with the sheets in hand. Report what you find back here... and if you have digital camera, take a few shots and post them here. Then we will be in a better position to advise you on value... Good Luck and welcome to the Lugerforum. BTW, I am also in VA...and work in Herndon. Send me a Private Message with your phone number if you want to talk about it. PM's are sent by using the PM Icon on each post...

Hi Matt. I believe the value varies widely, ($350 - $3500+), depending on model and condition.
One option might be to go and inspect it and note down all the markings, proofs, barrel length etc along with making an estimate of the amount of finish remaining and if it appears to be refinished or not. Also check if the serial number on the frame matches that on the barrel and breech, (including a small letter probably). The last 2 digits of the serial number should probably be stamped on most of the small pieces you can see, (sear, takedown lever, parts o the toggle etc.)Also note any markings on the magazine(s). Armed with the above the experts here could give you some good guidance. Having said that; something's worth what someone will sell for and someone will buy for, (as I know through costly experience |
