I am not familiar with German revolvers, but the angle of the top with the flap closed and the shape of the cylinder molded into the body gives that much away. Or am I being Captain Obvious? I like its simple lines and am also curious as to what revolver it was made to contain, etc.

My best guess would be postwar made for a S&W revolver with a 4" barrel or less. TH

I agree with Tom. A postwar holster for a S&W .38 cal. revolver. The term "Bahnpolizei" is generally associated with the postwar Railway Police.
Here are a couple of other postwar examples.
