Police Luger Question

Sorry guys, no picture. Sunday I was at the Kittery Trading Post in Kittery Maine. A huge sporting good store with a VERY large gun dealership. Any way, they had 3 Lugers on hand only one of interest was a complete Police rig all matching including mag. One exception, the barrell has no S/N and a slightly off the the rest of the Lugers finish, which looks 95%. The Barrell has what looks like the standard cal. markings (I think) The S/N is 4467 with a 'U' slightly below the S/N. The chamber is marked 1942, toggle is a Mauser banner, with sear safety. No unit markings. The holster is in great shape marked 1941 on the rear, complete with loading tool. The asking price is $2,900. Could the barrell be a period replacement? or would it have been marked with the S/N? Outside that, it has my intrest.

Hi Bill,
The 1942 Mauser police banner is described on page 360-361 in Don and Joop's 'The Mauser Parabellum'. It states that very few barrels were numbered, but did have the barrel gage and sometimes with SE/655 acceptance.
The price seems like a bargain to me.

Well, considering that one of the most knowledgeable folks on the forum, works part time in the Kittery store, if it says original, it probably is

Ummm - I'm one of the few Senior Traders for the store, in addition to my other part-time duties there as Senior Sales, previously Asst Mgr and now currently, Manager of the Internet Firearms group... I'm the one who purchased it for KTPs inventory, and that came from an older gentleman who's uncle was in WW2. I tried to convince him to keep it within his family, but he is older and no one has any interest in firearms.

I believe that it's right in all regards, including, as noted - the barrel and all stamps. The holster is a superb example as well in excellent condition by a desirable maker.

There is one thing you need to know, which accounts for the price at being substantially LESS then found from other dealers - which is that the hold open is ONE diget off..? I believe it was the way it left the factory originally - but, that's purely speculation on my part.
