Reloading 9mm for P08
Hi,
I'm just starting to reload de 9mm luger ammunition but have a few questions. What powder can I use? What heads are good and will work fine? If I read online,Ii see different types: some say hollow point, other say round and then others are speaking of the flat heads. Can anyone tell me some more what to use and what not? I have fired 115 grain and 124 grains without any problem. Thanks |

The Luger was originally designed for use with truncated cone bullets. I have shot it successfully without feed problems with Lead Truncated Cone bullets and with round nose FMJ bullets.
I reload for the Luger with both Titegroup and W231 powders. Load them toward the lower end of the guidelines and work up as needed. A good online source for load data comes from Hodgden. http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp Find the tables you need and print them for your use... They list a variety of their powders with a variety of bullets. Marc

Search my name and you will find at least 6 loads that are all one holers at 25 yards, all with perfect function, which can be a real problem with Lugers. The details will be in the various posts. Best powders for me have been IMR's SR4756 and Power Pistol. Here is an example to get you started. Winchester commercial brass, Remington 1 1/2 pistol primers, 124 gr. Hornady FMJFP, O.A.L. 28.7mm (critical for reliable function) Power Pistol- 5.4 grs. (full strength, three shot clover leaves all day long) SR4756- 5.5 grs. (full strength, three shot clover leaves all day long) HS-6- 6.2 grs. (on the hotter side but fine, two out of three touching, very clean burning) Bullseye- 3.7 grs. (light target load, up to seven touching at one time) Lugers are great fun to handload, once you catch on to some of the basics. They are also extremely accurate and reliable when the proper loads are shot through them. Through one of my Lugers I've fired over 3,000 rounds without any malfunctions whatsoever! Send me a PM and I'll be happy to assist in getting you started. Good shooting!! Sieger Last edited by Sieger; 12-24-2013 at 05:54 PM. |

I have had by best results sticking with 115 and 124gr FMJ. I use both Unique and Power Pistol with good results. I try to keep the OAL long, as they function better in feeding. Any Luger can be tempermental about ammo, so you will need to do trial and error until you find what works best for YOUR Lugers

I couldn't agree more! Here are some general statements regarding OALs. Round nose bullets 1.173 inches Truncated cone bullets 1.14 inches The Luger will shoot HP Bullets just fine, if they are of the right design. Avoid short, broad-mouthed HPs and you should do fine (I haven't had any luck with the Sierra HPs). For determining the proper OAL for the specific brand and type of bullet you will be shooting, please search my thread on "How to Determine Proper Cartridge OAL when Handloading". Sieger |
