I'm sorry for this being a bit off topic, but I value the knowledge contained in this forum. You guys know your stuff. I need an expert opinion.

On another forum I frequent, there is a debate about whether this stamp closely resembles the SS Waffen eagle. You people have seen a lot more of these Waffen Eagles than I have, and I would like to know whether you believe this new US postal design to be influenced by the Waffen SS Eagle, or do you think it is just a normal American eagle?

To keep politics out of it, you could just answer yes, (you think it is infuenced by the waffen ss design) or no (you think this has nothing to do with the waffen design).

I would appreciate any help and sorry again if this is off topic, but you seem like the group that would have an honest unbiased opinion about something like this. Thanks!

I have been told by several third reich militaria delars that an SS eagle has it's wings stretched straight out. So I don't think the US government had the nazis in mind when they released the stamp.

I collect Nazi memorabilia and have never seen a Nazi Eagle that looks like the stamp. Just a mess of Liberals still crying because GW got elected.

I had some pre-stamped envelopes that had a similiar eagle on it, and it did remind me and a friend of those eagles. I think the envelopes were from the Clinton era ;^)

is that the eagle IS America's symbol, and it is just the ART DECO STYLE in which this one is portayed which leads one to relate it to those of an earlier period. And therefore, if one wants to romp through the past looking for similarities, one will find that in fact the Reichalder (which is the official name of the SS eagle) was a copy of the Roman Eagle. So if it makes it any easier... yes the new stamp bears a striking resemblance to the Roman Eagle.

Swamp Gas, I think that the design of the eagle stamp shown was more influenced by a similar smaller eagle used on the US 1945 issue National Defense Medal issue stamp. Tom h
