Try taking the set screws out and see if you can unscrew the barrel by hand. Maybe clamp the extension sideways in a vise (without crushing the forks) and wrap a rag around the barrel and try to unscrew it.

I would guess the setscrews are a 'bubba' solution to timing the barrel to the extension. Best case scenario, you'll be able to unscrew the barrel without too much effort. Worst case is that there are no threads on that 'bubba' barrel and the setscrews are the only thing holding it in place...
