If it's any consolation, I've seen serial number die overstamping before. I have one from Mauser in 1936.
It's possible that a factory worker picked up the wrong die, stamped the number digit, realized the error and then overstamped the correct digit.
That said, there is quite a bit of damage around the attached barrel serial number area, and the receiver sits proud of the frame, which sometimes indicates that the frame was manipulated in this area.
